Theme – “system” option doesn’t work

In the menu bar, the View/ Theme setting value “System” doesn’t behave correctly. When activated, it should switch the theme to correspond with OS theme (light / dark). It doesn’t. Regardless if the OS is in light or dark, activating the “System” setting always switches the app theme to light.

  • Hi Piotr,

Sebastian here. I hope you are doing well.

Thanks for the clear details about your setup. If I understand correctly, choosing View > Theme > System in the Simplenote Windows app always gives you the light theme, whether Windows itself is set to light or dark. I can see why that would be frustrating when you expect the app to follow your system.

On Windows 10, the color setting for apps and the one for the taskbar and Start menu can be set separately, and the System option in Simplenote follows the app setting. It’s worth a quick check on your end:

    1. Open Windows Settings > Personalization > Colors.
    2. Under “Choose your color,” select Dark. If it’s set to Custom, set “Choose your default app mode” to Dark.
    3. Go back to Simplenote and select View > Theme > System again.

If the app mode is already Dark and Simplenote still shows the light theme, could you let me know:

    • Which option is selected under “Choose your color” (Light, Dark, or Custom), and the app mode if it’s Custom?
    • Whether the theme changes if you restart Simplenote after selecting System?

In the meantime, you can select View > Theme > Dark to keep the dark theme no matter what Windows is set to. Microsoft also has a short walkthrough of the app color setting here: https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2016/08/08/windows-10-tip-personalize-your-pc-by-enabling-the-dark-theme/

Once I have those details, I can report it to the team if it turns out to be a bug in the app.

    Warm regards,
