Synching erased new notes

Yikes! I accidentally placed my iphone 16 next to my iphone 15 and the 15 overrode the 16 notes erasing a month’s worth of notes! I went to history. It showed today’s date but not those notes. Why would the older notes take precedence over the newer notes? How can I restore the notes from this last month.

  • Hi @petalsinparadise2014,

    Thank you for reporting this.

Could you first confirm whether both iPhones are signed in to the same Simplenote account?

It would also help to open Version History on one of the affected notes and check whether any earlier versions are available there. Please also sign in to Simplenote on the web and see whether the missing content appears there.

If the notes are still missing after those checks, let us know and we can continue troubleshooting with you privately. Please don’t post your Simplenote account email address here on the public forum.

Yes, both phones and laptop all use the same account. I checked the history on all devices and it is the same: missing the current entries.

It doesn’t make sense to me that old data would overwrite new data. I would think the action would be the opposite when synching.

  • Hi @petalsinparadise2014,

Thanks for checking History on all three devices. That’s really helpful, and I’m sorry you’re dealing with this.

On why older data would win: Simplenote devices don’t sync with each other directly, so the two iPhones being next to each other wouldn’t cause this on its own. Each device sends its changes to our servers and gets the latest version back from them. When two devices make conflicting changes to the same note, the replaced version is kept in that note’s History. Since History doesn’t show your recent entries on any device, it suggests they may never have reached our servers from your iPhone 16. When the iPhone 15 then synced, there was no newer version on the server to keep.

A few more places to check before we draw any conclusions:

    1. Trash: On your iPhone, open the sidebar menu and tap Trash to see whether anything from the last month is there.
    2. Search: Use the search bar to look for a few words or phrases you remember from the missing entries, in case they ended up in a different note.
    3. A fresh browser session: On your laptop, open a private/incognito browser window and log in at https://app.simplenote.com. This shows exactly what’s stored on our servers, with nothing cached. Check the note and its History there.

Until we’ve finished checking, please don’t log out of Simplenote or delete the app on either iPhone.

One more question: did the missing entries ever appear on your iPhone 15 or your laptop before they disappeared, or had you only ever seen them on your iPhone 16?

Let me know what you find and we’ll go from there.

    Hello Staff!

I found the notes! I had to go back far enough past the glitch for them to show up. FYI, nothing in trash.

Thank you so much for your support!

  • Yay! That’s great news!

With that, I’m going to close this thread. If anything else comes up in the future feel free to create a new thread and we’ll be happy to help.
