Simplenote widget not working on iOS 27 iPhone

Recently updated my phone to iOS 27 and now the home screen widgets have stopped working. They have an associated note when you try to edit them, but they’re completely blank + you can’t actually change the note it’s associated with in edit mode, it’s completely unresponsive. Will attach images as reply

In the third one, when I try to click the blue “FOOD LOG” (name of the note), it doesn’t let me change which note it’s associated with

Hmmm. Have you tried creating a new widget?

Yes, I’ve tried creating new ones, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, restarting my phone, etc

  • Hi @duanjeffrey –

    Hi there,

Thanks for the screenshots and for listing everything you’ve already tried. That saves a lot of back-and-forth.

I set up Simplenote widgets on an iPhone running iOS 27 and couldn’t make the problem happen: the widgets showed note content, and I could change the note from edit mode:

Something about your setup must be different, so could you send me a few details?

    1. Your Simplenote version (Settings → About in the app)
    2. Your iPhone model and exact iOS version (iPhone Settings → General → About)
    3. Which widget you’re using (single note or note list) and what size (small, medium or large)
    4. Whether you’ve turned on the passcode or Face ID lock in Simplenote’s settings

It would also help to try this once:

    1. Remove all Simplenote widgets from your Home Screen
    2. Open Simplenote and wait a moment for your notes to sync
    3. Add one new Simplenote widget and choose a note for it

Let me know whether that widget shows the note. Either way, the details above will help us narrow it down.

    1. Version 4.55
    2. iPhone 16, iOS 27.0.1
    3. single note; doesn’t matter if it’s small medium or large, I still see the same issue
      • the note list does seem to work; might switch over to using this instead
    4. no, passcode and faceID lock are off

Tried these steps. It’s exhibiting some weird behavior:

    • in the widget menu it does show the actual note:
    • but when I add the widget, it shows up as “Note no longer available”, and when I try to edit it, it says “Choose” as the note source:
    • then, when I click off the edit menu, Simplenote transitions the note to showing a blank screen, and when I try to edit it it says that the note is now “Hello world” (the test note I created) but I can’t edit it

Not really sure what’s going on.

Also, for full context/just in case it’s useful—I’m using Simplenote to sync with nvALT on a Macbook, but I don’t think that should be impacting the widgets.

  • Hi @duanjeffrey –

Thanks for running through those steps and sending all the details. They help a lot. Your version (4.55) is the latest one, and your device and widget setup look fine, so I’d like to rule out nvALT just in case.

Where did you create the “Hello world” test note: in the Simplenote app on your iPhone, or on your Mac?

If it was on the Mac, could you try this once more?

    1. Quit nvALT on your Mac.
    2. Open Simplenote on your iPhone and create a new note there. Give it a moment to sync.
    3. Add a new single-note widget to your Home Screen and choose that new note.

Let us know whether the widget shows the note or still says “Note no longer available.”

I created the “Hello world” test note in the Simplenote app.

I followed those steps and had the same behavior as before (initially “Note no longer available” + Choose, then when I click off it’s blank + title of new note)

  • Hi @duanjeffrey –

Thanks for running through all of that, and for checking where the “Hello world” note was created. That rules out nvALT and anything specific to your notes or your setup.

You’ve already tried everything we’d normally suggest, so I’ve reported this to our developers with your steps and screenshots so they can look into the single-note widget. I can’t promise when a fix will be ready, but I’ll post an update in this thread if I hear anything.

Until then, the Note List widget is the best option since it’s working for you. One way to keep it close to a single-note widget is to pin the note you want at the top of the list:

    1. Open the note in Simplenote.
    2. Tap the ⓘ (info) icon at the top.
    3. Turn on Pin to Top.

The pinned note will then show first in the Note List widget.

Sorry about the trouble, and thanks for your patience while the team takes a look.

  • Hello @duanjeffrey,

Do you have updates about that, do you still need help? We usually close inactive threads after one week of no movement, but we want to make sure we’re all set before marking it as solved. Thanks!

It still isn’t working, I’ve just shifted to using note lists.
