Publishable timestamps and version history for provenance & priority

  Simplenote already preserves an internal history of edits, and notes can already be published publicly. I would like Simplenote to combine those two capabilities by allowing users to publish a note together with its creation date, latest modification date, complete version history, and the timestamp of each saved revision.

  This would be especially valuable for researchers, inventors, writers, journalists, and other people who need to establish when an idea was first put into writing and how it developed over time.

  For scientific and intellectual work, priority often depends on chronology. A public note that displays only its current contents is useful for sharing, but it does not show when the note was created, what earlier versions contained, or when specific passages first appeared. Since Simplenote already stores revision history internally, providing an optional public history view could turn a published note into a much stronger provenance record.

  A user could choose whether to publish only the current version or to publish selected metadata and revisions. The public page could show the original creation timestamp, the most recent modification timestamp, a chronological list of revisions, the exact time of each revision, and a read-only comparison between versions.

  It would also be helpful if each revision had a permanent public URL and a stable identifier or checksum. That would make it possible to cite a particular version and demonstrate that its contents had not been altered afterward.

  This feature would not need to claim that Simplenote provides formal legal certification. It would simply expose the historical records that Simplenote already maintains and allow users to present them transparently.

  For independent researchers like me, this could be extremely important. I have early scientific notes whose internal Simplenote history may help establish when specific concepts were first documented. Being able to publish that history would help demonstrate provenance and priority without relying only on screenshots, personal testimony, or later publication dates.

  I believe this would make Simplenote uniquely valuable as a lightweight, trustworthy record of intellectual development while preserving the simplicity that makes the service useful.
