Markdown not optional?

On MacOS 26.6.2, M3 Pro, with newest desktop Simplenote (2.27.1) the markdown option (three dots “actions” -> Markdown checkbox in top right corner) seems to be mostly ignored ie it interprets markdown regardless. E.g.
# something
displays in large font (except for #, which is displayed but in regular font size)
**something**
displays in bold (this time including the asterisks)
The only different on checking the “markdown” box is that a preview (eye) icon appears. That display is different, but works as expected.
It would be nice for markdown markers to not affect anything if no markdown option is checked.

Hi. I believe the “live” markdown interpretation was added in a recent update to some of the Simplenote apps, possibly those based on the Electron platform. It cannot be disabled, unfortunately

Thanks for the clear write-up, and thanks to johnswift37 for chiming in.
That’s right. Starting with version 2.26.0, the desktop and web apps add some light styling in the editor. Headings appear larger and bold or italic text is emphasized, while the Markdown characters stay visible. This happens whether or not Markdown is turned on for the note. The Markdown checkbox now only controls the full Preview (the eye icon).
At the moment there isn’t a setting to turn this styling off. Others have asked for the same thing, and the request is tracked publicly here:

However, I can’t promise when or whether it will change.
