Markdown function persisting despite being disabled

For both new and existing notes, disabling Markdown seems to have no impact on rendering text with italics/bold when using asterisks. Also, pasting in text from external sources is retaining italics/bold formatting, despite Markdown being disabled.

I forgot to mention that I use Simplenote on the Web in Chrome browser.

  • Hi harry7771,

Thanks for your patience and for bearing with us; we’re working on a backlog of support requests at this time, and we generally answer in the order received.

Also, thanks for reporting this, and you’re not imagining it.

A recent update (v2.26.0) introduced light Markdown styling directly in the editor, so asterisk-based text such as italic and bold now receives subtle visual styling as you type.

The issue is that this styling is currently applied regardless of the per-note Markdown on/off setting, which is why disabling Markdown doesn’t stop it. We’ve logged this with the team as something that should respect that setting, and it’s currently under review.

A couple of points that may help in the meantime:

    • This is purely a visual styling layer. Your note content is still stored exactly as you typed or pasted it — the asterisks remain plain text characters, and nothing is being converted or saved as formatted text. When you paste from another app, the editor is simply applying styling to existing asterisks rather than importing external formatting.
    • On the desktop app, there is an option to use an earlier version that doesn’t include this styling. However, since you’re using the web app (which always runs the latest version), that option isn’t available, and there is currently no setting to disable the styling there.

I’m sorry there isn’t a cleaner toggle available right now.

I’ve attached your report to the internal feedback so it’s tracked alongside similar reports.

Thanks again for the clear and detailed description.

    Kind regards,
