Duplicate pinned note titles on Mac client

    Strange bug on the Mac client: at random times, the title pane will show duplicate (and inaccurate) title names for pinned notes — in other words, the same title for two different notes with different content. Clicking on one will show the text for the correct note, but the title will remain that of the other pinned note. This will usually correct itself after switching back and forth between pinned notes and doesn’t appear to corrupt the text within the notes, but it’s a strange bug. Any thoughts/suggestions?

    This is on Mac version 2.18, but I saw the same behavior on at least one previous version, and on multiple Macs/OS versions.

    Thanks for reporting the issue! Any chance you’re using the app on multiple devices? I personally experienced this issue when I accessed and edited my notes on another Mac device.

    In the meantime, I added your report to a similar report to be looked into by our developers. I don’t have the timeline for a fix, but please rest assured it’s on our radar.

    I have seen what appears to be a related problem in Simplenote for macOS, but have no pinned notes.

    A note in the sidebar displayed an incorrect title. In my case, the incorrect title was an old title previously beloning to a different note.

    Opening the incorrectly titled sidebar entry opened the correct note and content: the notes themselves did not appear to be mixed up; only the title displayed in the sidebar was wrong.

    I was able to correct the sidebar display by cutting the affected note’s actual title and pasting it back in. After doing that, the correct title appeared in the sidebar.

    This suggests that the underlying note/title data may be intact, while the sidebar is displaying stale or incorrectly associated title information until something causes that note’s title to refresh.

    Additional details:

    • I have no pinned notes.
    • I use the same Simplenote account on both macOS and Android.
    • I observed the incorrect sidebar title on macOS.

    Simplenote for macOS: 2.21
    macOS: 26.6.2 (25G83)

    Thanks for adding your report, and especially for working out that cut-and-paste trick, that is a really useful clue.

    This topic was originally about duplicate titles specifically on pinned notes, but since you mentioned you have no pinned notes at all, what you are seeing looks like a related but slightly different case (a stale title shown in the sidebar, rather than two pinned notes sharing a title). The note content itself is not affected either way, only the title shown in the list.

    Since the trigger seems different from the original report, would you mind opening a new topic for this one at https://forums.simplenote.com/forums/forum/support/ ? Please include the details you already shared here (Simplenote for macOS 2.21, macOS 26.6.2, same account also used on Android, and the copy/paste workaround). That keeps it trackable on its own rather than attached to a years-old thread, and makes sure it reaches the team with the right details attached.

    In the meantime, if it happens again, the same trick you found, cutting and pasting the title back in, should refresh the sidebar display.
