Difficulties logging in on laptop using Windows app and web app on Chrome
-
Hi all
I’m a regular user of Simplenote and find it super helpful to be able to make, access and edit notes both on my phone and my laptop.
Yesterday the Windows app on my laptop started playing up, showing just a blank white screen. I followed troubleshooting guidance to log in to the web app and the same occurred when I did that on Chrome. I tried logging in an incognito browser window and same.
Then I tried Microsoft Edge and, to my surprise, I was able to log in fine and see all my notes, including the latest info that I had entered on my laptop, using the Windows App, which hadn’t synced to my phone.
There was no change today, so I decided to delete the app from my laptop and reinstall it. Alarmingly, now I’ve done that and logged back in, it’s completely empty and inviting me to add my first note. I used the same email address that I always have and logged in using the code emailed to me.
Please can anyone advise me? I’m really concerned that I might lose all my notes.

I’ve now logged out of the Windows app and am finding that it won’t let me log in, even though I’m using the same email address I always have. Argh!
It’s saying ‘Could not log in with provided credentials.’Is anyone else having these problems?

Hi. The web app accesses your notes on the Simplenote server. As long as you can view them using Edge, they’re still safe. It might be wise to capture a backup though. In the web app, Hamburger menu, Settings, Tools, Export Notes. This downloads hour data in a notes.zip file.
I don’t know about the login problem, but it might have to do with some security change on the computer. Have you recently updated the OS?

Thank you, @johnswift37. That’s good advice. I’ve done that now, so feel a bit less anxious about all the info in my notes.
No, I haven’t made any security changes. It was fine one minute then suddenly I was logged out of Simplenote and struggling to access it.
My internet connection was very low at the time, as, unbeknown to me, the booster had been pulled out of the wall. I don’t know if that might have affected it. But it’s strange that it still seems to be working fine on Edge.
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Can anyone else advise me on my login issues?

Hmmm… New development.
The empty web app window on Chrome is now showing my Simplenote feed as usual – a positive step forward.
Strangely, though, logging in on the Windows app still isn’t working. It’s still telling me ‘Could not log in with the provided credentials’.
It’s so handy just to be able to click on the icon in my toolbar, so I am really keen to get back to using the Windows app if possible.

Hi @kathryn476,
Good news first: your notes are safe. As John mentioned, the web app reads them directly from the Simplenote server, so if they’re showing in Edge (and now Chrome again), nothing has been lost. Good call on taking an export backup too!
The
Could not log in with the provided credentialserror only appears on the password login screen. If you normally sign in using the emailed code, you may not have a password set at all.In the Windows app, please try the following:
- If you’re on the password screen, click Log in with email.
- Enter your email address and click Log in; don’t choose “log in manually”.
- Simplenote will email you a 6-digit code. Enter that in the app.
That’s the same login method you’ve successfully used before. Alternatively, if you prefer using a password, you can set one here: https://app.simplenote.com/forgot/ and then use Log in manually.
It’s also worth checking your app version under Settings → About Simplenote. The current release is 2.27.1. If yours is older, you can update through the Microsoft Store or get the latest release here: https://github.com/Automattic/simplenote-electron/releases/latest
The earlier blank screens were most likely related to the dropped WiFi booster, especially since Chrome recovered once the connection did.
If the code login still doesn’t work, let me know your Simplenote app and Windows versions and we can dig further.
Let us know how you get on.

Hey @kathryn476,
Do you have updates about that, do you still need help? We usually close inactive threads after one week of no movement, but we want to make sure we’re all set before marking it as solved. Thanks!
