Can’t access the back up

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I’ve been using the old version of the app Version 1.2.2. Code Version Code 24. I didn’t know there was a new version since it never showed up for an update.

Problem is I had to reset my Huawei phone, I did a back up with HiSuite but when I opened the app all notes were gone.

When I try to access the back up from the app, I get the message “This app is blocked. This app tried to access sensitive info in your Google Account”

Help please, are all my notes lost?

Hi. Your notes should be synced to the Simplenote cloud servers. If you open the Simplenote app and login to your account, the app should refresh from the cloud. It may take a little time to download.

Thanks for the reply. Old version didn’t have account login, I hope it works with the Google account I had the app on. I will try it.

  • Hi @princescenteda952ad90cf

    I’m sorry you’ve hit this.

First, one thing that’s sending you in the wrong direction: Simplenote doesn’t use Google accounts to sign in, and never has. A Simplenote account is just an email address, with either a password or a one-time code we email you. So that “This app is blocked” message isn’t from Simplenote — it’s your phone’s backup tool asking for access to your Google account. Sorting it out won’t bring your notes back, so I’d set it aside.

I’ve checked our records for the email address behind your forum account here, and there’s no Simplenote account registered to it. That leaves two possibilities, and you can tell them apart quickly.

The first is that you used a different email address. That’s easy to check: search your email accounts — including the Google one on your phone — for any message from Simplenote. A signup confirmation or a login code email would tell you exactly which address your account is on. If you find one, go to:

    https://app.simplenote.com

and sign in with that address. You can request a login code by email if you don’t remember a password. If you had an account, your notes will be there and resetting your phone won’t have touched them.

The second possibility is the one I want to be straight with you about. Version 1.2.2 is many years old, and on Android versions that old, Simplenote could keep notes on the device without an account at all. If that’s what you were doing, those notes only ever existed on that phone. We wouldn’t have a copy on our side, and there’d be nothing for us to restore — the HiSuite backup would be the only copy, and that’s Huawei’s tool rather than ours.

If none of your email addresses turn up a Simplenote account, that’s the likely explanation.

So the one thing to do next: check your email accounts for anything from Simplenote, and let us know if you find an address that works. If you’d rather not post it here, that’s completely fine — just say so and we’ll continue by email.

Whatever the outcome, one thing worth doing going forward: the current version is 2.38 and needs Android 6.0 or newer. If your Huawei has no Play Store, either use the web app at https://app.simplenote.com in your browser, or download the app directly from our official releases page:

    https://github.com/Automattic/simplenote-android/releases/latest

Both keep your notes on your account rather than only on the phone, so a reset can’t take them again.

Unfortunately no accounts found, which means it was all the phone. I’ll try the HiSuite in case I can find them.

Thanks for the efforts, really appreciated. Ill download the new version.

  • Hi @princescenteda952ad90cf,

I’m going to mark this thread as resolved for now. If you have questions about Simplenote in the future after updating to the current version, feel free to open a new thread.
