Windows App Crash and Notes History
-
We recently had the following message sent to us by a user:
Been using Simplenote for years, and run it on two window 10 machines.
On both machines it crashes a few times per week and needs to be shut down through the process explorer. Is this being worked on?
On another note: I see for my notes that the history goes back to around summer last year (15 months give or take). Is this intentional and/or can notes be set to save the all-time history? This would be neat to use it as a sort of diary.
First, for the issue with the Windows app crashing, which version of the Simplenote app are you running?
In addition, do you notice when the crashes usually happen? For instance, is it when you access a specific screen in the app or click on a certain button? The more details you can provide, the better.
Next, saving note history is indeed intentional. If users want diary-like features, however, they may want to look into another app that is precisely built for keeping journals, which is also built by our parent company.

Hi! I’m not the user who made the initial report, but I think I may be seeing a similar crash. I’m using what I believe is the Electron version of the app, v2.21.0, on a Windows 11 desktop.
The crashing seems to happen just while typing, in my experience. I’m usually writing whatever notes I need to take when I start to notice a little bit of lag, where it can take a few seconds for the app to show the last few words I just typed. So I wait, the text appears eventually, I try typing again, and then the whole app crashes to a totally blank white window and I need to force-close it from the Windows task manager. After reopening it again it seems to be fine, at least for a while until it happens again. Doesn’t seem to be related to clicking any buttons or options, at least.
The note I’ve mostly been working on lately has ~7700 words/43000 characters in it, usually—goes up and down as I remove content I didn’t need/was just drafting. Not sure if size has anything to do with it but thought I’d share just in case.
If there’s any other info you need or any sort of logs I can share (or if you’d prefer I move this report to a new thread, if this seems unrelated to OP’s issue), just let me know! Thanks!

@thescarletdragon Thanks for sending us your report and all the extra details! We really appreciate it.
We have a few questions for you:
- Is the crash only happening when you open that particular note with approximately 7700 words/43000 characters? Have you experienced any crashes while working on other notes, even when you don’t open that specific note?
- If you haven’t tried yet, could you please open that note (and any other notes) on our web app on this link: https://app.simplenote.com/? Let us know if you experience any crashes there too.
Finally, did you download Simplenote from the Windows/Microsoft App Store? If you’re open to it, could you please try downloading it from our Github repo to see if the same crash occurs?
Thank you!

Hi, @staff-fred! Thanks for getting back to me; sorry I’m only just noticing this.
I only ever noticed the lag and crash in that larger note, but I also wasn’t spending much time working with the shorter ones. That said, I haven’t had any crashes at all recently, so hopefully it’s something that resolved itself with some computer restarts and possibly Windows updates?
I’d thought I was using the Github repo version, but it looks like it was the Microsoft Store one. I’ve uninstalled that and switched to the Github version, just in case.
Fingers crossed the issue’s gone for good, but I’ll report back with any more details if I do notice it again!
