Windows 10/11 Executable for shortcuts

Hi! I searched for both “executable” and “shortcut” here but no luck. Here’s my issue: I use a keyboard launcher to launch all my programs in Windows. One such launcher, Hain, searches for executables in all the appropriate locations and I can launch every program installed on my computer just by typing a few letters in the launcher (like “wo” launches Word).

Where is the Simplenote program installed? It’s the only program on my Windows 11 computer that can’t be launched this way. I assume the app is just a container for the web interface, but if I can launch it with a mouse click, why can’t I launch it with a text-based launcher? Maybe there’s a trick like first creating a desktop shortcut and then pointing the launcher at that? Or creating a shortcut to wherever the executable is and then putting that in ~AppData/windows/programs/ ?

    Any help is much appreciated!

  • Hi @nearnearnear 👋

I’m not familiar with the keyboard launcher, and it seems like Windows 11 doesn’t show the file path for Simplenote files.

If you need a file path to launch the app with the keyboard launcher, an alternative solution is to install the Simplenote app by downloading the .exe installer from the GitHub repository.

The default installation file path will be at C:Usersyour_usernameAppDataLocalProgramsSimplenote

    I hope this helps.

I have a similar question. I want to create a Windows 10 desktop shortcut to run the installed Simplenote app. What is the path to simplenote.exe?

Typing Simplenote in the search bar and then Open File Location goes to C:WindowsStart MenuProgramsSimplenote. This is apparently left over from an old installation; it contains a shortcut Simplenote pointing to “C:Program Files (x86)SimplenoteSimplenote.exe” which doesn’t exist.

Looking at the path referenced above, C:Usersyour_usernameAppDataLocalProgramsSimplenote, that Programs folder does not contain Simplenote.

So, what is the path to the Simplenote executable, and how is it managing to hide but still be executable from the Start menu?

There is a folder C:Users<your_username>AppDataLocalPackages22490Automattic.Simplenote_9h07f78gwnchp> but I don’t see anything useful there to link to.

  • Can you please try looking in the following places:

    C:Program FilesSimplenote
    C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingSimplenote

Please let us know your findings.

I’ll answer your questions – but I wonder if stuff from an old version is left in the registry and causing problems. Do you have a utility that wipes out everything from current and past Simplenote versions?

BTW when I run Simplenote from the Start menu – when it does run – it’s version 2.22.1.

C:Program FilesSimplenote doesn’t exist. That’s the first place I look for executables.

    C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingSimplenote doesn’t exist either.

There is a C:ProgramDataSimplenote, but it only has a file installer.exe dated 9/5/18.

When I type Simplenote in the search bar, it shows icons labeled “Simplenote App” that point to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsSimplenote. That folder exists, but only has two broken links to C:Program Files (x86)Simplenote which doesn’t exist.

When I posted last time, I could click those icons and run Simplenote, but that doesn’t work any more.

In Add or Remove Programs, there are three Simplenote entries:
    Simplenote Automattic, Inc. dated 8/10/24
    Simplenote dated 4/18/21
    Simplenote 1.14.0 dated 4/18/21/

The last two can’t be uninstalled – the link is broken.

  • Hi @toolworker1

While Simplenote itself doesn’t have a built-in utility to wipe out all registry entries, there are third-party tools designed for this purpose. However, proceed with caution when using such tools. A popular option is CCleaner.

If you’re hesitant to use a registry cleaner, you could try a clean installation of Simplenote.

If the app icon was accidentally removed, the path might be different depending on the installation path of the app. You can try searching files and folders on your PC with the keyword “Simplenote” to locate the Simplenote.exe file to create the shortcut.

    It’s C:Program FilesWindowsApps22490Automattic.Simplenote_2.22.1.0_x64__9h07f78gwnchpappSimplenote.exe

I didn’t look let the search run long enough before. Apparently Windows doesn’t index those folders.
