URL Links Clear Cache
-
If I have a link in a note, is there a way to clear the cache and history of the browser that opens with the link? I am assuming it is a built-in browser, but I see no option to clear the history or cache or cookies. Please help.

Hi. Which device/computer are you using the Simplenote app on? The answer may differ based on that.

Hi @peteroo31,
I’m not entirely sure what you mean by clearing the cache and history of the browser that opens with a link in a note.
Could you clarify what kind of link you’re referring to? For example, are you clicking on a web link that you’ve pasted into a note, or a link to a published note?
If you’re referring to a link to a published note, that’s a way to share your note on the web for others to read, and anyone with the link can view the content in their own web browser.

No, not links to notes. I am talking about if I put a link to a normal web page in a note and click on that link, it opens a browser. How do I clear the history and cache of that browser? It does not open an external browser, but it does remember history because I used it with a link to Bing. I want clear that browser.

Hi there, @peteroo31! Thanks for providing additional information about what you want to do. I’m not sure if you’re using the Safari web browser on iOS, and have Bing as your search engine. Or if you have the Microsoft Bing Search app on the phone.
Here are some steps to clear cache for Safari from Apple’s support documentation. If you need help with the Bing app, you will need to contact them for more assistance.

Hi @staff-eleanor. I don’t think you understood the OP’s question. When you long press on a web link in the Simplenote iOS app, it does not open in Safari. It opens in a browser generated by Simplenote. It is very simple, with no tabs, and a Done button in the upper left. So the question is: how can the cache and cookies from that browser be erased? I suspect it might require deleting the Simplenote app and all its data.

@johnswift37 You’re right — the in-app browser doesn’t open Safari, but instead uses something called Safari WebKit, which is the same engine that powers Safari behind the scenes. It’s not the Safari app itself, but a lightweight browser built into the app using Apple’s WebKit technology.
@peteroo31 Simplenote doesn’t offer a built-in way to clear the in-app browser’s cache or cookies. So, as @johnswift37 pointed out, the only way to fully erase that data is to delete and reinstall the app.

It feels a bit absurd and impractical to need to delete and reinstall the app every time I want to clear the cache and cookies, which is a normal practice. Can you verify if clearing the cache and cookies for the regular Safari app will also clear the cache and cookies for the one in the webkit in SimpleNote?

You’re right that needing to delete and reinstall an app just to clear browser cache and cookies feels impractical, especially for something that’s a normal practice.
To answer your question:
Clearing the cache and cookies in the Safari app does not affect the in-app browser used in Simplenote. Even though it runs on the same underlying engine (Safari’s WebKit), each app using this technology has its own separate storage for web data like cookies and cache. That means Simplenote’s in-app browser manages its own data, independently from Safari.Unless the app provides a built-in option to clear this data (which Simplenote currently doesn’t), the only reliable way to reset it is by deleting and reinstalling the app, which we agree isn’t ideal.
We’ve passed this feedback along, and we appreciate you highlighting it.
