Urgent: Help Needed to Recover Deleted Notes
-
Dear SimpleNote Support Team,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to request your urgent assistance regarding an issue I encountered with my account.
Recently, I attempted to access my SimpleNote account, but I noticed that I had been logged out. After logging back in, I was shocked to find that all of my notes were missing. I did not delete these notes myself, and they are no longer visible in the app. These notes are extremely important to me, and I rely on them heavily.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could investigate this matter and assist me in recovering my deleted notes. Below are the details of my account to help with the process:
Email associated with the account: [(email visible only to moderators and staff)]
Date when the issue occurred: [2025/01/21]
Please let me know if you need any additional information to proceed with the investigation. I trust your team’s expertise in resolving this matter, and I am hopeful for a positive outcome.Thank you in advance for your support. I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
Best regards,
[Alyass Shkir] -
Hi. Were you using the Simplenote web app, app.simplenote.com, in a browser? While editing a note, did you see the “busy wheel” in the sidebar, showing that it was trying to update the server? Did the busy wheel stop, showing that the server had been updated? If it did not stop, it is possible that you could not upload to the server, and your notes were only in the browser cache on your device.
Are you behind a protective firewall or router that might block uploading from your device?

Thank you for your response. I would like to clarify that there was no issue with synchronization prior to this incident. I had the Simplenote app installed on both my mobile device and my computer, and the synchronization between the devices was working perfectly.
All of my notes were saved in the application itself, not in temporary storage or browser cache. Everything was functioning normally, and I never experienced any problems with saving or syncing my notes until now.
However, this time, I was surprised to find that all my notes were suddenly deleted from the app without any action from my side. I’m not sure what caused this issue, and I urgently need your help to recover my notes as they are very important to me.

Please try the following steps:
- Try to open simperium.com in a browser. If you get the simperium welcome page, then
- Try to login to app.simplenote.com in the browser. This is the Simplenote web app. You should be able to see all your notes there, updated to the last time they were synced. If that works, then the native app you were using has trouble accessing the server.
Let us know what happens and we’ll see how to proceed.

I tried opening simperium.com in a browser, but it did not open until I activated a VPN. Once it opened, I attempted to log in from the simperium.com page using the same email and password I use in the Simplenote app, but it showed an error and would not let me log in.
I then accessed app.simplenote.com through a browser. I successfully logged into the web version of the app, but unfortunately, my old notes were not visible there.
I would like to clarify that synchronization was initially enabled in the app. I could previously see any note I wrote on my mobile device immediately synced and available on my computer as well.
I hope this information helps you identify the issue. Please let me know what can be done to recover my old notes, as they are very important to me. -
Did you access app.simplenote.com with the VPN still activated? Because it sounds like you cannot reach the server at simperium.com without the VPN. (You cannot log in directly to simperium.com, as you tried. It just provides the cloud storage for Simplenote.)
I understand that this used to work. For some reason, your internet provider no longer supports it.

To clarify, when I initially used the app, I did not need a VPN to access or sync my notes. However, at present, synchronization only works when the VPN is enabled.
That said, my primary concern is not about the VPN or connectivity issues at the moment. What I really need is a way to recover my notes that were deleted from the app. These notes are very important to me, and I would appreciate any assistance or guidance on how I can retrieve them.

Hi @eezide74!
I checked the email address you provided in our system, and it shows that your account was created on 2025-01-20. It seems that this account might not have any notes associated with it yet.
To assist you better, could you please confirm if you might have previously used a different email address to sign up for Simplenote? Alternatively, it’s also possible that you previously logged in using a WordPress.com account, which could be why your notes aren’t appearing.

I am having almost the same problem and am panicking. In my instance I have only one Note which has totally disappeared; but it is a hugely important quite lengthy Note and I have no way to retrieve the information it contains. I was working with it on an iPad, closed the app,, opened it again about 15 minutes later and everything EXCEPT that Note is still there. I have Googled and searched Help, but it keeps directing me to things I do not have on my screen. — a 3-dot menu, “View” menu, a History icon and more. I tried to login to the web version but cannot find where to do that. PLEASE PLEASE tell me there is some way to get this particular Note back so I can immediately back it up making sure I don’t ever take a chance on this happening again.

Hi. Have you checked the Trash, in the iOS Simplenote app sidebar?
Have you possibly accidentally changed the title (first line) of your note? Try searching for a distinctive word in the note. Or maybe you changed a tag; try looking in All Notes.
The three-dot menu is (…) in the upper right of the iOS Simplenote app. It is only available when editing a note, so not much help when the note itself is lost. Same for History.
To access the Simplenote web app, login at app.simplenote.com in a browser. The web app accesses the cloud server directly, so it sees exactly what has been synced.
I am a very long-time user of iOS Simplenote. Once a week I login to the web app and select Settings, Tools, Export. This downloads a notes.zip file containing all the data. I rename these to reflect the date, and archive them to my cloud server. Never needed it, but it gives me peace of mind. (The iOS app does not include this feature.)

You could also change the Sort Order (in Settings) to Modified: Newest, and see what pops to the top of All Notes. You may need to scroll down past any pinned notes.

Hi @bobbih60,
Lost notes can usually be found either in the Trash or in the history of an existing note. We recommend checking the trash and revisions in whichever app you use the most, as well as the web app at https://app.simplenote.com. You’ll want to sort the notes by the last modified date from the app settings before you start checking, as @johnswift37 mentioned.
It’s worth restoring notes from the Trash so you can view their history. Pay particular attention to any blank notes you can see or titles you don’t recognize.
To search the history, open a note and click the clock icon at the top, then move the slider.
Also, use the search field to check for content that may have been in the note. We don’t recommend just searching for the title, as we’ve seen people have trouble finding notes when accidentally deleting or changing the title text.
