Unable to log in from Firefox (401 Unauthorized)

    Hello Simplenote staff,

I am just letting you know that I am unable to log in to my account. I am using password manager (not entering password manually), and password is correct (I know this because I am able to log in from Chrome browser with same credentials, copied and pasted from password manager).

Furthermore, I noticed that this problem happens only in Firefox browser (it was tested without any active browser add-ons), and, like mentioned above, I am able to log in from Google Chrome browser.

Firefox is important to me, because I use it for everything, and chrome is just for testing, so this breaks my workflow, and it cripples many more users, probably.

By looking at this forum, I can conclude that errors like this are common for Simplenote, and I have seen that some users even said that they are leaving Simplenote because of this, so you probably want to solve problems like this.

I wanted to send you my IP address, but since you don’t have some contact form where I would contact you directly, I won’t post it here, so It’s up to you to do appropriate testing.

    Best wishes,

Hi. Try disabling “Enhanced Tracking Protection” in Firefox for the Simplenote site. This may be preventing you from sharing a cookie between the Simpenote servers.

Thank you. It might be the cause of the problem. I managed to log in by disabling enhanced tracking protection and deleting all site data.

The captcha is, however, still annoying 😒

Developers should consider using some another captcha (except hCaptcha which is even worse for users than google captcha v2), or at least captcha v3.

Despite from this, the login form doesn’t need to be so hard protected, the only forms that need actual protection are registration form and password reset (because of email sending functionality), and login form might be protected with some more user-friendly solution, because the only concern there are eventual brute fore attacks, which can be also mitigated at the application level.

  • @luminouscreation6c5cd1b09a Thanks for the feedback! We understand your frustration with the captcha. We’re actively working on improving the login process and may remove captcha altogether. Your input helps us prioritize these changes.
