The whole note disappeared

Hi, I lost a whole note. And it’s lost on all three my devices and not in Trash.
There is not much I can tell about the circumstances, just opened Simplenote to past a text in it and it wasn’t there. It was a big old note called Watch with the names of movies to watch so I was often copy/pasting texts from web in it. I also searched through all note for some keywords and didn’t find them. Any advice how to recover it?

  • @sassafazz, I can imagine how frustrating this must be.

It is great that you’ve already checked your trash folder. We recommend checking the trash and revisions on whichever device you use the most, as well as the web app at https://app.simplenote.com. Before you start checking, sort the notes by the last modified date from the app settings.

It’s worth restoring notes from the Trash so you can view their history. Pay particular attention to any blank notes you can see or titles you don’t recognize.

To search the history, open a note, click the clock icon at the top, and then move the slider.

Also, use the search field to check for content that may have been in the note. We don’t recommend just searching for the title, as we’ve seen people have trouble finding notes when accidentally deleting or changing the title text.

Thank you Joey. what does it mean “check revisions”?

  • @sassafazz Checking revisions means checking the History of a note, so you can see past versions of it. For example, on Android, you can view a notes’ History according to these steps:

    1. Open a note
    2. Tap the three-dot icon on the upper-right corner of the screen
    3. Tap “History”
    4. At the bottom of the screen, a timeline will appear. You can go through the timeline and restore different versions of the note.

Dear staff, did you notice that the name of the topic is “The whole note disappeared”? Why advise useless advices? So, there is nothing we can do and any note can disappear anytime?

I encountered a problem where I could see all my previous notes in the Windows app, but when I logged in to the website and Android, there was nothing. How can I make my phone with complete notes sync? Just like before…

@sassafazz in rare cases there can be sync conflicts that result in a note being placed in the trash unexpectedly or content from a note ending up inside of another note. We recommend checking note history and trashed notes for the missing content to see if you experienced one of these rare instances.

Be sure to also check the history of any blank or duplicate notes you can see as well as the Trash and restore the notes from there. Notes put in the Trash still retain their version history.

Have you double check to make sure you’re logging in to the same account on all of your devices? You can see the account you’re logged in to within the Windows app by navigating to Menu > Settings.

How I restored the lost note:

Turned on computer, which was turned off for some time, and before opening Simplenote, switched off Wi-Fi. Then opened Simplenote and copied the lost note. So, if you lose smth in Simplenote, before checking it on other device, disable internet 🥰

    @sassafazz Thanks for sharing this!

Just to confirm—are you still experiencing any issues, or is everything sorted now?

Frank, you mean did I lose any more notes?😁 I don’t know, could be))

  • @sassafazz Hopefully, you don’t!

That said, for precaution against data loss, you can also export your notes regularly: https://simplenote.com/help/#export

I turned on my computer after it had been off for a while and made sure to switch off Wi-Fi before opening Simplenote. Then I opened the app and was able to copy the lost note. So if you ever lose something in Simplenote, try disabling the internet before checking it on another device.

Try checking older versions of the note through the “History” feature if available. If it’s not in Trash or History, and syncing was enabled, you could try turning off Wi-Fi and opening the app on a device that hasn’t synced yet. If that doesn’t help, contact Simplenote support directly.
