Slide Over/Split View on iPadOS16

  • Unknown's avatar

Simplenote on iPad does not respond to the keyboard position when it is in Slide Over or Split View on the right. If you position the input cursor in the lower part of the screen, the keyboard simply covers the entry point. The document view should scroll up to keep the entry point visible. You cannot scroll to the bottom of the note while the keyboard is displayed. It works normally when on the left; simply swiping the Slide Over across to the left makes it work. I’ve noticed that other 3rd-party apps (GoodReader) also exhibit this behavior, but Apple Notes works correctly on either side. Simplenote 4.48, iPadOS 16.4, iPad 6.

  • Hi @johnswift37 👋

Thanks for reaching out! The Simplenote app currently doesn’t support the Slide Over/Split View feature.

I have added this request to our feature request list. We cannot guarantee if or when we may add something like this but rest assured, it’s on our radar now.

Just saying, it used to work fine until iPadOS 16 broke it. I’m not talking about multiple Simplenotes, just one Simplenote instance in Slide Over or Split View with another app in the other window. Now, if Simplenote is on the left side of the screen, in Slide Over or Split View, and you position the cursor, the view scrolls up so the keyboard does not cover the input position. If Simplenote is on the right side of the screen, it does not adjust for the keyboard position, as if it doesn’t “know” the KB is there.

I’ve been using Simplenote like this with no problems since Slide Over was first introduced (iOS 10?). And I’ve used Split View since getting iPad 6 five years ago. I suspect iPadOS 16 may have changed the data it sends when the keyboard is opened and the app is on the right; possibly related to changes for Stage Manager, which my device does not have.

And Simplenote 4.45.1 still works fine on my iPad Air, with iOS 12.5.7 (latest version for this device). Whether it’s in Slide Over on left or right, it scrolls up when the keyboard is opened, to keep the insertion point visible.

So, I don’t believe this is a Feature Request, just a relatively minor fix to keep up with Apple iOS changes. The app still works fine, you just need to scroll the text up manually. And I add some junk content to the bottom of a new app, to let me access all the “actual” data, while the keyboard covers the junk.

  • Thanks for sharing the additional context, @johnswift37!

possibly related to changes for Stage Manager, which my device does not have.

We’re having an issue with another app we developed when an iPad is attached to an external keyboard. The issue was resolved after disabling Stage Manager.

Do you have the issue with the on-screen keyboard or an external keyboard?

Since your device doesn’t have Stage Manager, the workaround solution to disable it doesn’t apply to you. But we will file a report to be looked into by the developers after we confirm if this is an issue with the on-screen keyboard or an external keyboard.

    Thank you!

Definitely on-screen keyboard. When Simplenote is on the right, it does not scroll up when the on-screen KB covers the insertion point. Amusingly, the app on the left does scroll up, even though it did not request the KB. So, the left app “knows” that the KB is there, but the right app does not. And, as I already mentioned, other 3rd-party apps also exhibit this behavior, but Apple Notes works properly.

  • Thanks for confirming this is for the on-screen keyboard. I filed a report to be looked into by the developers, but I don’t have a timeline for fixing it.

Thanks again for reporting the issue! I’m closing this topic for now, but if you have other questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to create a new topic. And thanks a lot for helping out in the forums!
