Simplenote Servers Performance Issues August 2023
-
Hello Simplenote Support Team,
We know that you don’t have a crystal ball or super natural way of seeing the future, but…
Has the Simplenote syncing issue been resolved?
And or are you able to estimate when the Simplenote App will be syncing across all platforms without any further issues?
A periodic update would be good for those of us that currently use Simplenote on a daily basis.
A duplicate reply post has been posted on:

We will look forward to your positive feedback.

I too have had several issues. Yesterday (8-Aug 2023) I added content to one of my notes. This was quite a few paragraphs. All these paragraphs had disappeared a few hours later. I thought I had accidentally deleted something.
But today, I again added content to this note. And was very carefull to check it was all there when i closed the app. I closed and re-opened the note several times before closing the app to check if contaent remained, and it did. But now, an hour later, the added content is gone… How can this be?
I can no longer trust Simplenote to keep my content it seems… When will this be fixed? I see the last staff respons dates from 2 days ago?
I use simplenote on a dayly basis, this is very worrying…
Please fix!

You might consider commenting on my recent post about this; Simplenote conflict resolution has some problems. I’ve basically come to the conclusion that even when it’s working it needs some fiddling to make things behave how you would expect. But now that the sync servers are unreliable all the glaring errors in conflict resolution are really coming out.
So if you are suddenly missing data try the history explorer option in the app you typed that note into, sometimes it’s there.
If you see the message asking to export unsynced changes DO THAT.

I am going to suggest a workaround to this group that doesn’t fulfill the primary purpose of Simplenote but does preserve (hopefully) continuity. I am restricting use of Simplenote to a single device. My hope is that when sync starts working, because all of my changes are on a single device, those changes will be sync’d back to the server.
My W-11 devices are frozen attempting to sync, so I have banned them. My Samsung android app seems to sync the most of all devices, so I am sticking to that device. My hope is that when servers resume Sync to Cloud operations, the authoritative local files will then become the (correct) updated files in the cloud.
However, I want note something else for engineers: I logged into Simplenote.com to view what is being synced from Galaxy to SN server. I am seeing *portions* of notes synced. For example, I create a Note 1. Then I make Edit 1. Then I make Edit 2. Then Edit 3. Edit 1 and 3 are rendered from the local file (that contains all the edits) but Edit 2 is not present on the version on SN cloud servers. Maybe that will help your work.
Again, I will mention that if SN had a way to make a donation monthly less than $19.99 as I see on the Android app, I would do it. Someone earlier suggested SN make a way to donate whatever a person wants to donate. That would probably generate a lot of cash for SN servers and engineering. -
Restricting to one device is just as dangerous. A few times before when there has been a synching issue eventually the sync catches up though a version from one of your other devices takes the lead and the text gets wiped and does not always appear in the history. Anything important should be moved to Apple Notes or another notes app until Simplenote is hopefully at 100% again. Even when they say back to normal I will hold off for a few days. The lack of updates from Simplenote does not make me feel confident.

Similar issues here. I’m using nvAlt on Mac and SimpleNote on Android. Yesterday (Aug 8, 2023) when I added a paragraph to a note in nvAlt, it repeatedly disappeared after a while (on next sync?) in nvAlt, but it appeared in SimpleNote web, at least temporarily. At the same time, old chunks of text that I had deleted before came back.
For now I switched off sync altogether.

Long time user here. Not sure if this is related to your current server issue (subject of this thread), but lately, using the Mac version, I’ve noticed that often when I edit an existing note and type in some phrase, at some point later that phrase is duplicated 1 or more times (I think I’ve seen up to 3 duplicates of the same phrase appear). I can delete the dupes and they seem to stay deleted.
Note that I’ve been running v2.17, just updated to v2.18 but haven’t had time to reproduce the problem on this version yet.

Adding my own report – Simplenote was functioning for me fine over multiple clients until up to 40 minutes ago. But now, I see 3 clients (web, mac, iOS) all with different versions of the same note, and no apparent status or error messages.
-
Also adding my own report to the list – I’m having the same issue as the previous post. No syncing issues until the last half hour or so, now none of my three instances – web/mac/android – are syncing.

scottjalbert Thanks for mentioning the form. I have added my name and suggested price point. I think that $5 / month is a reasonable amount for a Note Taking Month subscription. $19.99 / month is excessive imo.
You’re absolutely right on the “Price to Value” model. People are happy to pay the appropriate amount of money they feel that a service is worth. I have my price point, but other people might feel the App is worth more than $19.99 / month. Choice is key. Perhaps simply add a variety of pricing tiers, and maybe even a “Your Amount” option (which I see in many charitable organizations).
I agree that Automaticc should get 100% of the money. I believe that WordPress charges for Premium Services. I imagine this means that Automaticc has experience with monetary transactions. If they add a Subscription page on the Simplenote site, I’d be more than happy to pay my monthly subscription fee through their site, instead of going through the App store.
I’ve been using Simplenote for many years and find it invaluable.
It 100% deserves financial support if people can afford it.
P.S : Transparency is key when asking for unexpected financial support, so Automaticc should explain to their users why they are adding subscriptions. Things like, “We’ve seen a huge increase in users. We’re up to 10 Million Active Note Takers, from just 1 Million back in 2013 when we launched the App (all hypothetical numbers just for illustrative purposes).” or “Server costs have increased 5 fold since we started Simplenote and they are very expensive. We want to continue offering Simplenote for free to as many people as possible, but with the massively increased userbase and increasing server costs, we need the Community’s help to continue maintaining Simplenote Ad free and free for those who can’t afford to subscribe.” -
@tbrogunier Right. SN would generate a lot more revenue if they offered their users more options than just $19.99 / month or $199.99 / year. For me, and many other users, that doesn’t seem like a reasonable amount for a Note Taking App. Like paying for 2 Netflix subscriptions or adding another Cell Phone plan.
If you want, you can fill out the form Here, that @scottjalbert suggested.
You can add what you feel is a reasonable monthly amount to support SN.
If you feel that a 1 time donation is reasonable…well, I guess just mention it here in this forum (as you already have).
Just to mention, most companies really appreciate monthly contributions as stable monthly income makes it much easier for them to plan out their budgets (hiring, investing in resources, expanding, etc).
I can’t imagine how costly it is to maintain the notes of hundreds of thousands, like millions of note takers across scores of personal devices.
Some financial support to keep it running smoothly (and hopefully avoid major hiccups like this current one) is very reasonable. -
Thanks for the updates. I’ve been having the same issues for days and have been copying pasting back and forth between another app so I don’t lose data. I’ve been a Simplenote fan for years now. I agree with the others here about a paid model. I would be more than happy to pay a monthly fee, but I do think $19.99 a month is a lot. For that I’d probably just change how I do things.

Hi, everyone! Thank you so much for your patience and understanding!
Our team has been investigating for a few days now and we have noticed a significant increase in the success rate of synchronization on our servers. We are closely monitoring the situation and are currently devising plans to prevent the recurrence of the same issue in the future.
If you haven’t done so, we recommend exporting your notes as a backup: https://simplenote.com/help/#export

Very excited!!
I’ve tried it a few times and it has indeed improved!!
thanks to the staff of the Simplenote!!! -
Once there is a confirmation of back to normal, I will hold off for a week, before I consider moving my important notes back again. Checking in here to get a status overview.
With Apple notes being a stable (!) and a free service, I would only consider paying anything for Simplenote if there was added value over Apple Notes and of course a reasonable level of support. There are of course other options other than Simplenote and Apple, in this field.
The interaction here from Simplenote, in the last week, on this current problem/s has been extremely low. This does not instil confidence in their focus and interest in this product. It would be nice to get some reassurance from them.

FWIW – SimpleNote Synchronization now seems to be working ok for me at the moment (07:40am/et/usa, Thursday, August 10, 2023; Pittsburgh, PA USA) – hope this helps in some way – in any case – Stay Safe and Healthy !!
