Simplenote Gets Extremely Slow On My Android App
-
Hi team,
I have been facing this issue for quite some time now that simplenote becomes very very slow and laggy on my phone. This has started happening quite frequently. Whenever I try to edit or update a note the typing becomes extremely slow.
Could it be because of the amount of data or notes I hold? Because I hold a lot and I have a feeling with the increasing data, the efficiency of the app has been getting impacted. Can someone please check and confirm the root cause here?
Device – Nothing Phone 1; Android Version – 15; App Version – Latest
Let me know if any other information is needed from my end.

Hi. The amount of your notes is not likely a problem; Simplenote is pretty smart about handling data. Large notes, over 32 K bytes, can be a problem if device memory (not storage) is small. But you should try quitting any other apps that may be running in the background. They might be interfering with your interaction.

I did think initially it was a RAM issue but it doesn’t look like. I’ll tell you why – I did memory profiling and most of the times when the issue occurred memory consumption was average or below average (50 – 60%). Secondly, Simplenote was consuming the average memory it does as well, so I’m not sure if it is a memory issue.
Side Question – How to estimate the size of a single note?

The info menu doesn’t give the size of the note, it gives characters and words.
But anything on the laggy and slowness of the app front? Could it be because of the size of all the notes I have? Because my app has gone very slow now. Can I provide something that can help the tech team debug this?

Just to clarify, is the app slow in general, or only when editing notes?
Also, are your notes normally lengthy, or do you mostly have small notes?
Any additional information you can share will be really helpful!

App is not slow in general it is only while editing notes.
My notes are normally pretty lengthy.
Sometimes, I feel the app gets slower only while editing the notes which I edit quite frequently. It could also be a case that the app gets slower only while editing lengthy notes. The root cause could be the length of the note or the size of all the notes in general. I suspect the latter since it has started happening quite frequently now and I generally switch a note once it hits around 30k characters because I have noticed that it starts getting much slower after 40k characters. So the size of the note might not be an issue, but the size of all the notes in general could be an issue.
Let me know if anything else is needed from my end to debug this further. I’d be happy to help.

Thanks for the additional context, @rachitsalhotra
I can confirm that a bug report has been filed for this. We hope to have this improved in a future update to our app.
