Rich Text Support

The Simple Notes app and web version (both android and windows versions) are best but there is no support for rich text formats like Bold, Italics, Underline, basic highlight, checklists and bullet points. Would love to see these features added in the next update as these are basic features required when taking notes.

Actually, checklists and bullet points are already supported. For other formatting, you can use Markup and view a Markup preview. Check the FAQ (https://simplenote.com/help/#markdown) for details.

  • @suhitmittalca1999 Yes, what @johnswift37 said.

You can use Markdown if you want to use formatting on your notes. Please check the guide that is already shared and let us know if you have any questions around it.

I recently chose simple note after finding this as the no BS note taking tool, cross Device support, ticked all points, started using then found out the lack of this very basic feature.
I use notes to swiftly like ( Headline: what to ask client) then pointers, ( headline: changes to be made in campaign) then pointers.
All this is done swiftly, and without being able to see headline with headline font is so hard. Not at all good.
Same approach of headline is used for all other things, it is a very basic need.
Who is going to use markdown, then add 1 after headline then go to markdown to have a markdown view.
You guys are smart, no need to explain the logic behind it. I would request to please add this feature, i have moved all my data to this app.

  • @leshgena Thank you for your suggestion! I’ve added it to our list of feature requests.

I’ve been using Simplenote for years now, and I find it just perfect. It runs smoothly on my Mac and Android. My only complaint is the lack of rich text support, and I don’t quite understand the choice of relying on Markdown. It feels overly complicated to switch between preview and edit modes, and it’s frustrating that you can’t edit the text in preview mode.

I imagine this topic has been brought up many times before, and I assume that Markdown is fundamental to the program’s design, but I really don’t understand why this choice was made. For years, I’ve been formatting my notes manually with slashes and bars to improve readability, but it’s quite frustrating. Having rich text support would make things so much easier.

  • Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the matter, @cohenfly! I’ve made sure to pass those along to the team.

I’ll echo others here. Lack of rich text support is basically a non starter for me. YES, I am aware that you can use markdown, but not everyone WANTS to use markdown. Not everyone has grown up typing in markdown, and I am NEVER going to use markdown. I truly find the lack of rich text support baffling as it’s been a basic feature of pretty much every text editor since the dawn of time.

  • @crossbaycj Thanks for sharing your thoughts. We’ll make sure to note it.
