Paste a note has lost line breaks

  • Unknown's avatar

I used to be able to copy and then paste a Simplenote into Gmail perfectly. Now I am losing all line breaks. I have tried turning on markup as suggested by AI but no difference.

I use Simplenote for boilerplate email responses and so this lost of functionality is really bad.

Hi. This might be a gmail problem. Have you tried pasting into another app?

I just tried pasting from a note with line breaks to GoodReader, and to Apple Mail, using Simplenote 4.49 on iPadOS 16.7. The formatting was preserved in both cases.

Please try pasting into a different app, to test whether gmail is at fault, not Simplenote. If you’re using a 3rd-party keyboard, you might also try pasting with the Apple keyboard, just to be sure.

I find that the Line Breaks from Simplenote notes are preserved when pasting into Apple Mail or Apple Notes

but not when pasting into the GMail App in iPhone from Simplenote

The issue is more easily fixed by Simplenote than in the GMail application

  • Thanks for the additional info. We’ll note it.

Experiencing the same loss of line enders pasting into Gmail app from SimpleNote.

My use case is similar to the OP’s: Drafting messages in SN and then pasting into GMail to send.

    GMail in paid Google Suite.

Device: iPad Pro 12.9 M2, current iOS. Apple Magic keyboard.

Same results with copy or paste done with my Apple Magic Keyboard or the touch UI.

Same results with or without the SN title block included in the copied text.

GMail is the only app that I experience the problem in. Not in:

    Google Calendar event Description field

    Google Photos image Description field

    MS Word document

EZtext editor app’s docs created in all four modes (plain text, rich text, HTML, Markdown)

Note: I also am experiencing an intermittent inability to cut or copy text in GMail, working with the SN text that has been pasted into GMail after a stop in one of the above apps to solidify the line enders. I did NOT experience that intermittent problem in the tests performed in verifying for this trouble report.

    Two updates:

    1. Same results in a quick basic test on an up-to-date iPhone 14.
    2. When I select all and copy in SN and then paste repeatedly in Gmail, each paste starts a new line of text.
  • Hi, @danbf9f8eed6d32! We have an open issue for preserving line breaks when pasting into Gmail.

I posted some new information from GoogleOne support here. I do not know how to add a A+ or other comment to move it up. As of today no one is assigned this issue. This is a new issue BTW. I have used SN for many years and have not had this issue until a year or so ago.

    Hey Automattic,

Is there anyway that you can move this topic along? I see no activity here or in github

  • Hi @plattj! Our developers are being kept busy with other projects at the moment but we are still supporting the app, keeping an eye on things, and planning for future updates.

At the moment, our development efforts are needed more urgently elsewhere. Since Simplenote is run by Automattic, we have a number of other apps and projects in our wheelhouse, and have to decide where to focus our work.

But rest assured that we ❤️ Simplenote (many of us use it on a daily basis) and this is definitely on our radar!

I did some Googling recently about generic pasting problems in Gmail on iOS, not specific to Simplenote. I found reports of people unable to paste into Gmail at all. Some of those reports said that removing and reinstalling the Gmail app had fixed that problem. So I tried the remove/reinstall on my iPhone and on my iPad and found that pasting into Gmail from SimpleNote now kept linebreaks intact.

Since I first reported this issue, I have switched to a new iPhone. Its apps were loaded from the iCloud backup of the old phone. I experienced the pasting problem on both phones. Apparently, the pasting issue traveled from old phone to new phone.

Presumably, various kinds of initialization happen when the Gmail app is removed and reinstalled on an iOS device.

IT WORKED – Many thanks for your tip. I was about to scrap Simplenote so you saved many hours of work.

Pasting into Gmail from SimpleNote now keeps linebreaks intact

  • Hi @danbf9f8eed6d32 and @plattj,

It’s great to hear that the remove/reinstall of the Gmail app resolved the line break issue when pasting from Simplenote! Thank you, @danbf9f8eed6d32, for sharing your findings and helping others.

Since it sounds like you’re all set and the issue is resolved, I’ll close this topic. If you encounter any further problems or have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to start a new thread.
