Note just disappeared

    Hi

Can you please help me? I had my note opened in the background (Iphone XR). After I switched to Simplenote it just refreshed, moved me to the main list and automatically erased the note that I was using. I cannot find it anywhere, neither on the list nor in a trash. What has happened and what can I do to restore it?

Sounds like Simplenote may have crashed. I can explain how to find out, if you’re interested.

But you could try searching (inside Simplenote) for some distinctive word inside the doc, in case it really is not lost.

    Hi John

Sure I’m interested as I’m in the urgent need of restoring things that were written down there.

I was trying to do so but was not succeed, neither a title of that note nor particular parts were able to be found.

  • Hi @dave5323 👋

The web app at https://app.simplenote.com reflects the data synced to our server. If you haven’t done so, can you please log in to the web app and check the notes (including trash and revision history) there?

    Hello @staff-romina !

Checking the web app was what I did just after I lost that note on my iPhone. Unfortunatelly, it reflected the same database as on iPhone after that disappearance.

Revision history? I can find a revision history only for particular existing notes. There is no revision for whole database (as well as for lost one notes).

What is more I also lost some part of a still exisitng penultimate note : (

Do you think there is any chance of restoring those missing notes? Maybe some copy is still saved on your server as it was always synchronised?

To see if Simplenote crashed, open the Settings app, pull down on the sidebar, and search for “Analytics”. Select it, and open “Analytics Data”. Search in Analytics Data for “Simplenote”. If there’s a file at the time of your crash, it probably indicates there was a crash. Staff folks may want to see this file, since it may indicate what Simplenote was doing at the time. Note that these logs are deleted automatically after 7 days.

As a possibly relevant sidelight, I’ve experienced crashes (SIGKILL) after relatively long and intensive editing sessions involving a lot of copy/paste between different notes. My work-around is to force-quit Simplenote every few hours. You can do this by viewing the iOS Task Switcher, and swiping up on Simolenote.

I’ve done what you suggested but can’t find any file connected with Simplenote. I’m afraid it may be gone as I reinstalled app few hours after crash.

Thanks for your advice with force-quiting, shame I didn’t stick to that before.

  • Hi @dave5323, thanks for confirming that you didn’t see the notes in the web app.

We’ve also followed up with you via email, please respond to us whenever you have the chance. Thank you!
