Not syncing / Server connection
-
Connecting my pc’s and phone through a VPN (USA/Las Vagas), https://simperium.com/ and https://app.simplenote.com/ connect and behave normaly (for the past hour). I dont want to use VPN by default. I am based in Australia. I assume US users dont have issues? Hope this helps the dev team, needs to be fixed please.
-
Actually, even using a VPN the service is broken at the simplenot end. Shame. Frustrating.

I have exactly the same problem.
I use Simplenote on my Android Samsung Galaxy S21 and on my Windows 11 Huawei Matebook D 16, and I’ve just lost all my notes on Windows after logging out and in.
I still have all my notes on my Android, which I have exported as back-up.
I only see 2 very old notes on the webapp.
I will migrate to a different note taking app unless this issue is resolved rapidly. -
Update: I have been able to sync again on my Windows 11 machine after connecting with VPN to Houston USA. I am in Ecuador. I wonder if that can partly explain the issue? Though note that my Android app syncs well without VPN.
-
@elianpusceddu Thanks for keeping us in the loop.
We’ve noticed that this issue tends to come and go, occasionally resolving itself without intervention. While a VPN might help in some instances, it’s not a guaranteed or constant solution.
We’re still actively on the case, striving to understand the problem more comprehensively so we can provide a lasting solution. We’re truly grateful for all of your patience and understanding throughout this process.

Thanks – VPN seems to remedy it. Web app was showing no notes. I changed my server location (from Germany) and it loaded in my notes from Mac. Android still stuck, so I guess at I gotta one day install VPN on that too.
SimpleNote had a flawless 3 years track record with me. Really annoying it broke just now, and I’m up after midnight trying to sync notes needed to travel in a few hours…

Got the same issue (from Germany). No device is syncing (Laptop, mobile). Also cant reach http://simperium.com/.
-
By the way after relogin all my content was gone – even on website. Glad that I had a backup.
-
@digitalkoch. Your content is not “gone”. It is still on the simperium server, which you are unable to access. That’s where the Simplenote web app accesses the notes. Please do not attempt to restore your files from the backup. This will result in duplicates of every note.
-
@johnswift37 maybe you are right with duplicates (which I had then). But I thought that the website (browser) may not use simperium directly. However it looks like it does, as webpage works with VPN.
-
Actually, the web app does use the simperium server directly. Whereas, any of the native apps on computers or devices use a local copy of the entire notes database. They need to sync local changes with the server, but they can be used temporarily off-line.
-
Simplenote not syncing with any of my devices (iPad 9, Android Realme 8, Macbook Pro), I just logged in the web app and all my notes disappeared! It shows an issue with server connection “Simplenote hasn’t communicated with the serve in a while…”
-
@igorlegari welcome to the chain. You are one of a few found this forum and guessing one of many thousands having this issue. Until this is solved there may be only 2 workarounds:
- use a VPN to US (Cyberghost works for me)
- or set the IP for simperium.com manually in your hosts file to e.g. 192.0.84.247
Second way is not so nice for smartphones and maybe the server is originally a cluster with multiple IPs.
-
Thank you! In the meanwhile, I’d like to export all my notes as a backup. Usually I did it on the web app, since the other apps doesn’t allow to export all the notes. I just tried from my phone and it just saved the newest notes.
-
@igorlegari The other apps allow exporting now too, in case you still need to make the export. On Android, you can find it under Settings > Account > Export data. On the desktop apps, you can go to File > Export Notes.

@igorlegari, just to clarify, our instructions are for exporting your notes, not syncing that data on our servers (or on other devices). When exporting your data, you’ll be saving the file locally.
On Android app, you can export all entries by opening the navigation drawer, tapping the Settings item in the drawer, and tapping the Export data option under the Account section. You will be shown the system file explorer where you can choose to save your data locally or remotely via services like Google Drive if you have a Google account on the device. You will also be able to edit the file name, which is
simplenote.jsonby default. You can also export notes in the desktop app at File > Export Notes. Either method will download a .zip file of all your notes. The filename for each individual note is the first line of the note.
*To export notes on macOS, make sure you’re using the Electron version of the app, available here. The standard version of the app available in the Mac App Store doesn’t support exporting yet.
