Not syncing / Server connection

https://simperium.com/ is down again so https://automattic.com/ and https://app.simplenote.com/ down/not synching grr. Pays to BU your notes. Started looking around for alternatives to simplenote. Sad.

I can see that the web app has not updated for 24 hours.

I have notes on both my iPhone and MacBook which have not reached the web app. Both are updated by the Apple updates on Monday and carry the latest Simplenote versions.

I have added time stamps to both iPhone and MacBook. Once I, hopefully, see that the web app is updated my plan will be to backup and switch over to Apple Notes.

Over 10 years on Simplenote, though I cannot risk losing notes in an unstable environment with customer support which does not seem very enthusiastic.

May Simplenote’s memory be a blessing.

  • I’m not aware of any Simplenote outages recently. For those that are having trouble with sync and are unable to access the Simplenote web app and Simperium, have you tried connecting to another network to see if the problem persists from there as well?

I have been experiencing a similar problem over the past few days. I primarily use the web app on multiple computers. It keeps failing to connect to the server. However, it’s not a complete loss of connection, as it sometimes recovers, making me feel that the connection to the server is simply very unstable. Notes do not sync properly, and some information is lost due to sync lag and conflicting syncs. I have already tried logging out and logging back in, clearing cookies, changing networks, and accessing in secret mode. I’m really struggling with it.

You could try using a VPN to connect through another location (country). That may get around the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don’t quite understand why a VPN would be necessary because I am accessing from the U.S., but I’ll look for it. I also hope the VPN access is not the only solution.

The issue happened to multiple accounts on multiple devices across multiple different wifis. It was definitely a broader issue.

Fortunately, the issue seems to have disappeared overnight. I can log in normally and have no lost any data :)

    Simplenote won’t sync!

I’ve used it reliably for probably ten years. I love the Markdown, the simplicity, the reliability -until today- and the *speed*. I use(d) it often as the fastest, simplest, way to get text from my iPhone to my computer; much quicker to copy a URL, passcode (yes, of course, I delete them), address, etc on one device, paste into Simplenote and it’s immediately on the other device.
But, today, 02Apr25, sync just stopped. I made a note in Simplenote I needed on the laptop. When it never showed up I started looking around; there are ten years worth of notes on my iPhone app. There are NONE on Mac desktop app, or the web app on there or four different browsers. Yes, they’re all the same account, yes I have good internet connections. I understand if I log off on iOS everything’s gone, AND I can’t export it from iOS.
    Help, please?

    iOS 18.4 on iPhone 13

MacOS High Sierra (10.13.6) (highest the machine ((2017 MacBook Air)) will let me go)

Highest available browser in Safari, Firefox, and Opera

  • @swcpjbfemw could you let us know what browser version and operating system version you’re having trouble with this? Have you tried temporarily disabling browser extensions or testing from another browser to see if it could be browser specific?

@riseabove62 could you try logging in to the Simplenote web app using Safari (or another web browser) on your iPhone to see if your notes are present and up to date from there? Please let us know what you find!

Finally, the synchronization works. But I don’t know if it will last long.

My 4 different devices, 2 x MacBook, iPad and iPhone all showed different versions of my notes last night. I tried a different browser on 1 MacBook and it showed a version of notes from about 2 weeks ago. I logged out of the Web App on my main MacBook and when logging in all my notes were gone. From another browser I was able to download a backup thankfully.

I have moved to Apple Notes. Easy process to import the backup to there and I did a few notes I had updated yesterday manually to be safe (cut & paste).

3 or 4 times a year it seems Simplenote gets extremely unreliable. No more of this nonsense for me ! A shame after 10+ years.

To backup Apple Notes on the MacBook I am using: http://falcon.star-lord.me/exporter/ This works perfectly in the absence of being able to back up Apple Notes directly other than by 1 by 1 !

May Simplenote’s memory be a blessing.

  • Hi @sebadams61,

While I see you’ve already moved your workflow to Apple Notes, I wanted to provide some troubleshooting steps that might be helpful for others experiencing similar issues, or if you ever reconsider using Simplenote:

    • Check the web app: Can you try logging in to the Simplenote web app from within a web browser at https://app.simplenote.com/?
    • Verify notes in the web app: Please check the notes there to see if they are all correct and up to date.
    • Sync by logging out/in: If the notes in the web app are correct, you can safely log out and log back in to the Simplenote app on your other devices. When you log in again, all of the notes that are stored on the Simplenote service will be re-synced, and that should resolve any syncing issues going forward.
    • Check note history: If you aren’t seeing the correct notes in the web app or another Simplenote app, lost notes can usually be found in the history of an existing note. To search the history, open a note and click the ellipsis icon (⋯) at the top then select History…
    • Understand sync behavior: The slider of the history may not show the records in chronological order because of how syncing works on Simplenote, so it is not obvious unless you know how it works. For example, I can make a change on a note on Device A at 00:00 but the note doesn’t get synced to Simplenote servers probably due to an internet connection issue. Then, I can make another change on the same note on Device B at around 00:30 and the note gets synced to the Simplenote servers. When I access Device A with an active internet connection, the changes I made at 00:00 will be synced to the server and overwrite my changes that were made on Device B. In this case, the slider will show the record of 00:00 being the latest change, followed by 00:30.

I hope this information is helpful, even though you’ve already made the switch. We do appreciate you having been a user for 10+ years.

    @mikerockwell
I use Google Chrome (v134.0.6998.178) and Windows 10 Home.
    Disabling browser extensions: tried.
Another browser: tried Microsoft Edge, did not work.
It was back to normal yesterday, but it’s not working again today. So, I don’t think this issue is related to the browser, OS, or network, as it occurs and reoccurs in the same environment.

    An update on this.

I have been traveling for a few days and now in a different part of the country. Not sure whether because of this or not, syncing (I am using web app on windows and firefox as the browser) is working again (no continuous running of syncing button, communicating with server). However, I did not check with other versions of this app (windows app etc.) Anyway, I hope this lasts when I go back home.

However, I am not sure if our ISPs are trying to block something and simplenote is getting caught up in that or just simply errors related to the app itself. I will post another update when I get back home (after a week or so). At this point, it looks like it was an episode of periodic instability for my app.

Ive carried out these tasks and many others and there is no fix.

Issue is with https://simperium.com/ – the service https://automattic.com//simplenote use to sync thier service/servers. Simperium have been in and out of service the last few weeks coinciding with simplenote being in and out of service.

  • Unknown's avatar

[Grok3] Are these companies associated with each other in any way: https://simperium.com/ https://automattic.com/ https://simplenote.com/

[Ans] Yes, they are associated. Automattic acquired Simperium, the creator of Simplenote, in 2013. Simplenote continues to operate under Automattic, using Simperium’s syncing technology.
Problem then stems from Automattic (Simplenote).

I have the same problem since yesterday, when I enter the same wifi on my phone, I can see my notes but I cannot see them on the web, I do not use any vpn and I do not think there is a problem with my internet connection, I live in Azerbaijan.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Again sync don’t work.

  • Unknown's avatar

Looks like Chrome/Google identifies Simperium as harmful and results in sync not working.

  • Unknown's avatar

I cannot access http://simperium.com. I tried from different browsers and devices in my home Wi-Fi. So, if i enter to SimpleNote App there is a message that said “Simplenote hasn’t communicated with the server…” in the “Server connection” logo.

I’m from Argentina, I tried to enter/connect with a VPN and i can do it with any problem, the “Server connection” logo said that there is a successful connection with the server. I don’t think the solution was use the app with a VPN all the time, but i really want to that issue be resolve. I hope my test/situation help.
