My notes are lost
-
Hello,
I am a regular Simplenote users, I’ve been using it non stop since I started my current job +4 years ago, I actually heard about Simplenote at my workplace and I loved it because of its simplicity.
Anyway, today (30/04/2025) I woke up to my notes being lost. I haven’t used Simplenote in any way that is different than my usual tasks. I am a software developer and I have one note that I use as a prompt to MS Copilot, I almost use this note every day. I have some test credit cards provided by my management, some repetitive source code that I don’t use very often but are useful when required, I have notes about repetitive text that I paste into different web forms, and today all that is gone.
Yesterday (29/04/2025) I didn’t use Simplenote outside of my usual tasks like I said, I remember I copy pasted the text I feed into MS Copilot, I copied some phone number I needed to paste into a web form, perhaps I copied text templates also to paste into web forms. I don’t recall ever selecting the “Move to trash” menu option from the Simplenote actions menu (“…” icon on the top right) to any of my notes, let alone all my notes.
The only atypical thing that I had seen lately (perhaps from a few days ago) was a message on one of my notes with the sync arrows saying something in the lines that that specific note wasn’t properly sync. However, while I acknowledge I peeked at that icon and was prompted to do something I don’t remember pursuing any action.
All my notes are lost at the moment and it may be very hard to start from scratch.
Is it possible that I get support from Simplenote / Automattic team to see if my notes can be recovered?
I don’t think I am at fault here for my notes being lost.
I would greatly appreciate any help I could help, I am worried that my notes are lost and a bit sad that I may have to start collecting them back slowly again as they become needed.
Thanks,
Sergio

Hi. Are you using the Simplenote web app or the Windows app? I don’t believe your notes are lost. You just cannot access the server at simperium.com where the notes are stored. Your notes will come back when you are able to sync again. This server access problem is usually temporary. You might be able to get around it if you can connect through a different network, or use a VPN.
Since your notes include some important work text, you may want to “export” your notes when you next have a chance. This will give you text versions of all your notes that you can use in case of problems.

Thank you @johnswift37
I was using the Windows app.
You were right – my notes weren’t lost, they started to appear back around ~1hr after I saw the notes space empty. That said, I freaked out when I followed a suggestion about checking whether I was able to see my notes at https://app.simplenote.com/ , but that had showed no notes either.
I followed your advice and I exported my notes to a zip files and safely uploaded them to + my local copy.
Cheers,
Sergio
