Modernizing Simplenote While Preserving Its Core

I’ve been a long-time fan of Simplenote, its speed and “no-fuss” philosophy are exactly why I’m still a power user today. However, as the landscape shifts toward more intelligent tools, I feel the app is starting to lag behind. I love the simplicity, but I believe there is a middle ground where we can introduce modern functionality without losing that signature lightweight feel. These features would help the app stay competitive; I truly don’t want to leave Simplenote, but I may have to consider other options this year if the gap continues to widen.

Here are a few features that would keep the app ahead of the curve:

    • Google Drive/Gemini Integration: The ability to link to Google Docs or directly import notes for deeper analysis.
    • Semantic Search: Finding notes based on intent and context, rather than just exact keywords.
    • Automated Summarization: AI-generated recaps for quick digestion of long notes or meeting minutes.
    • “Ask AI” Overview: The ability to query an AI assistant to get answers sourced directly from my Simplenote database.
    • Writing Assistance: Built-in tools for brainstorming, grammar checks, and expanding on rough ideas.
    • Enhanced Tags: More robust ways to categorize and filter through large note libraries.
    • Rich Media Support: Lightweight formatting options like bolding, highlight colors, and functional link embedding.
    • Web Clipping: A frictionless way to capture research and snippets from the web directly into a note.
