Lost note content

Hi, last night before going to sleep I completed quite a lengthy note about a topic very dear to me. Today I discovered that most of it was lost: the text is cut off mid-sentence in the first paragraph, and the rest, approximately 1,000 characters, is missing. I’ve checked it on two devices, looked at the note history, trash, possible duplicates, but I’ve found no way to restore it. Is there any chance of getting the missing text back?

Hmmm. This is tough. Were you using the Simplenote web app in a browser, or one of the native apps on a computer or device?

Hi, it was a native app on an iPhone. For some reason the “final” state of the note wasn’t saved when I put down the phone.

Wait a second, the situation is worse than that: I just remembered that I added to the note soon after waking up this morning, and that addition is also lost.

Did the iPhone have good internet access throughout this process?

Could you try accessing it through the web app, app.simplenote.com?

I’m assuming the internet connection was fine: either the wifi or mobile internet should have worked; it is highly unlikely that both failed at the same time.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ve tried the web app and the native app on the PC, but I see the same thing.

  • Lost text in Simplenote can often still be found in the history of an existing note. I recommend restoring any notes you see in the Trash (even blank ones) and then checking their history using the Restore Note button.

A quick tip: the history slider doesn’t always display changes in strict chronological order because of how syncing works. For example, if Device A made changes while offline, and later synced after Device B had already saved newer changes, the earlier (offline) edits from Device A could overwrite the newer ones on the server. In that case, the slider will show the Device A edits as the latest change, even though they were made earlier.

So it’s worth carefully going through the different history versions, even if they don’t appear in order, since your missing text may still be there.
