Login not being remembered, and extreme CAPTCHA test every time

Simplenote is forgetting my login even after a short period of not using a device (eg 7 days), and logging in is a massive ordeal because the CAPTCHA keeps asking for more and more images before it is finally satisfied.

This has happened to me before. I’m not doing anything exotic, just using Firefox on Windows 10.

This is going to drive me away from Simplenote if it keeps happening.

Forgot to mention. I use a lot of websites that use CAPTCHA and have this problem only on Simplenote. I think the CAPTCHA is misconfigured on this site.

Hi. Try turning OFF “Enhanced Tracker Protection” for the Simplenote site. You can do this in Firefox, and the setting only applies to the specific site.

I’ve noticed that the login process now lets you log in via email instead of using a password, which doesn’t subject you to the CAPTCHA process.

This has significantly improved this issue for me, as opening my email to get the code is faster and less problematic. I still wish it would simply stay logged in on the computers I use regularly, not requiring me to log in at all. Remembering a login seems to last a surprisingly short time – maybe only a few days?

  • @thomasrutter Currently, the web app has a two-week authentication window, which is the standard. This means that you might be prompted to re-authenticate every two weeks to ensure the security of your account.

If you’re looking for a longer sign-in duration, you might consider using the desktop app, as they often handle authentication differently and can keep you signed in for longer periods.

Also, all my passwords are very strong and unique so I use a password manager 🙂

Are you sure it is two weeks and not two days?

I just got asked for a login and the last time I used it on this browser was Friday.

Note that yes, I use a password manager, but a password manager does not help with this issue at all, as it does not fill in the CAPTCHA for me or make it any easier.

  • @thomasrutter I can confirm the web app does have a two-week authentication window.

Does the two-week window have a one- or two-device limit or something then, such that it resets/logs me out when I log in on a different device?

I use Simplenote on more than one computer. Could it be that the times I’m asked to re-authenticate when it’s been significantly less that two weeks since I last used the app, may have been when I have used Simplenote on another device (web based, browser) in between?

I believe the two-week window only applies when you use the password. If you enter the code, you may need to do it every time.

I’m happy to report that as of the last few weeks, the CAPTCHA issue appears to be resolved.

That is, on two different occasions on different computers, I’ve been able to log in using password, and checking the “I’m not a bot” checkbox simply works without repeatedly launching an excessively long series of image recognition tasks.

It is still a little frustrating how often I need to log in, which is every other week, but at least this makes it many times less painful, especially with a password manager.

  • @thomasrutter awesome, thanks for the update!

As mentioned already, you may want to consider using our desktop app instead of using the browser version, as that might prevent the need to login every 2 weeks.
