Laggy since update
-
Since upgrading simplenote a couple of days ago it is really laggy. I’m on Samsung galaxy s22 One UI 7 android 15
-
I wasn’t able to reproduce this issue on a Samsung Galaxy S23, so I’d like to gather a bit more information to help troubleshoot.
Could you please let us know:
- Which version of Simplenote you’re currently using?
- Whether the lag happens in all notes or just specific ones?
- If restarting the app or device has any effect?
-
version 2.36
It is only apparent on large notes. Small ones are ok. But it didn’t used to happen before the last update and doesn’t happen on Web
ive tried restarting and cleared app/data and no difference
-
Thanks for the details!
To help us reproduce the lag you’re seeing, could you let us know approximately how many words are in the notes where this happens?
It would also be great if you could share a short screen recording showing the lag in action. That will help us better understand the issue.

Hi @simpledff4de6346 @secretlychief1972188b88
Thanks for the recording. I tested with a 12000 word note and didn’t experience any lag. However, we did have an old Github issue reporting similar problems on certain devices, so I’ve reopened that and added your report there:
https://github.com/Automattic/simplenote-android/issues/328#issuecomment-3311881773
For now, I’d suggest starting a new note, or splitting the note up into smaller notes to avoid this issue.

ok I tried copying the same content to a new note and still had the same issue. I would rather not have to split the note as I leverage having everything in one place so I don’t lose stuff

We can confirm that this issue is related to editing very long notes on Android devices. There have been multiple reports over the years of lag and responsiveness problems when notes exceed ~10,000–12,000 words or several pages of content.
It looks like your note falls into this category, and unfortunately, the Android component that the app relies on isn’t optimized for handling such large notes efficiently.
As a workaround for now, another option is to use the Web app to edit long notes.
As my colleague mentioned, we’ve already reopened a GitHub issue for this here: https://github.com/Automattic/simplenote-android/issues/328.

Seems like there is a specific issue here as it was fine until a couple of weeks or so ago. Not sure if this was tied to simplenote update or samsung update but something changed from making it not quite as snappy as small notes to having significant multi second lag.

@secretlychief1972188b88 Thanks for sharing this. It’s really helpful for the investigation. Our dev team has looked into the issue, but since it’s been difficult to reproduce, it’s not something we can fix right away. It’s still on our backlog, and if more cases come up or we discover a solution, we’ll reach back out here. We really appreciate your patience in the meantime.
