Hide all tagged notes from the main notes list
-
Hello, is there a way to categorize certain notes by tags, but have them appear only under that tag, and have them be hidden in the main list of notes, so those wouldn’t appear in the main list only under a tag?
AI based Help told me it can be done in Settings, but I haven’t found such option.

Hi. At the bottom of the sidebar listing tags there is “Untagged Notes”. This doesn’t exactly solve your problem, but it does let you see only the untagged items.
In my use of Simplenote, every note has one or more tags. General stuff is tagged with “Current”. Any note created while in the Current tag list is automatically tagged with Current, so it’s easy to ensure that all notes are tagged. And I manually order Current to the top of the tags list. When I open the app I always switch to the Current list and continue from there, so I never actually use the All Notes list.

Thank you for the response.
Yes, it may be a good solution.
But not exactly what I was looking for.
I needed to have the main list free of tagged notes.

I’m not sure why you feel the “main list” is so important. When I open Simplenote, I immediately open the Current tag, which is at the top of the manually ordered list, so I never interact with the “All Notes” list.
(Technical digression: The notes are managed as a “Collection” of objects, which is a minimal way of organizing data. “All Notes” is just the list of all the members of the collection. The various tags provide different views of the collection. And the “Untagged Notes” is just a view of the notes with no tags. If you have an Apple device, the Photos app uses a similar collection.)
If you need to use “All Notes”, you could Pin the untagged notes, so they would all appear at the top of the list.
Or maybe Simplenote could allow optionally changing the default view to the untagged list.

Cause AI Help gave me this answer and I was confused:
“Yes, you can create multiple notes under one tag in Simplenote. Notes that are tagged will only appear under that specific tag and will not appear in the main list of notes. This allows you to organize your notes more effectively. To create a note under a specific tag, simply select the tag from the tag list before creating the note. You can also add tags to existing notes by editing the note and selecting the desired tag. For more information on how to use tags in Simplenote, you can refer to our help guide here: Simplenote Help Guide – Tags“

OK, I’m a dummy here. What is “AI Help”, and how can I find it? It definitely seems to be wrong on this feature; perhaps it was removed at some time. The Simplenote web help page does not mention tags at all.

@richiehustle Thanks for your report. We’re still fine-tuning our Simplenote AI Assistant, so we apologize if it caused any confusion. You’re right, there currently isn’t a feature to hide tagged notes in the main notes list.
@johnswift37 You can find the “AI Help” or Simplenote AI Assistant at the bottom right of the Simplenote Help page. We encourage you to give it a try and let us know if you come across any inaccurate responses. Your feedback is valuable in helping us fine-tune the system. Thanks!

@staff-fred Dear Simplenote, could you please consider adding such functionality/feature, when one would create a tag (similar to a folder), and anything that goes under that tag wouldn’t appear in the main list (All notes the top one).
That would be totally awesome.
You can create that option in the Settings section and let the user decide if he wants to have it by Default (as it is now – always showing all of the notes regardless of the tags attribution being used), or alternatively to have an option when creating a Tag – to have all the notes that goes under that tag being invisible in the All Notes list.

Just remember, a tag is not “similar to a folder”. A tag is a means of grouping related items, and a note can have any number of tags. If you only use tags like folders, you’re not getting the maximum benefit from this feature.
And, since you can view “Untagged Notes” already, I cannot see the advantage in converting “All Notes” into a redundant “Untagged Notes” list, while losing access to all notes.
If you just want a list of notes you haven’t assigned to categories (“folders”), you can use a tag for them. I use the “Current” tag this way. Most new notes are created in Current, and that’s where I find most active content. I add additional tags to categorize those notes, when appropriate, and I delete the Current tag from them when they get old.
These suggestions will let you do what you want right now, while waiting for possible changes to Simplenote.
