Gboard Auto Capitalizing

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been encountering this glitch in Simplenote iOS for months now where any time I create a bullet point using the “-” character and hitting enter, Gboard will start to auto capitalize every word (shown in the Imgur gif). This auto capitalization also happens whenever I press enter normally to create a line break, but only around 50% of the time.

In Gboard, if I turn off the “auto-capitalization” feature, it stops this from happening. However, I’d prefer if this were fixed without having to change my Gboard settings.

Imgur embed didn’t seem to work properly: https://imgur.com/a/XFGbpUz

Tested a bit further, it seems like the autocapitalize when pressing enter normally for a line break only happens if Gboard is already in auto capitalization mode, as shown here: https://imgur.com/a/4pSfY9t

@duanjeffrey This is a very long-standing problem in iOS Simplenote. I use the Typefinity (formerly PadKeys) keyboard on my iPad and experience the same thing. May years ago I interacted with both devs, and it seems like Simplenote sends “Capitalize All Words” (like a title), instead of “Capitalize First Word”, to the keyboard. Our 3rd party keyboards implement this correctly, causing the problem. Unfortunately, the Apple keyboard somehow ignores it, so Simplenote says it’s not their problem. And the keyboard devs are just obeying the command, so it’s not their problem. They don’t play well together, so it’s our problem. Catch-22.

My Typefinity keyboard has cursor left/right arrow keys. I can work around this annoyance by jogging the cursor left/right when it’s primed to capitalize the next word. This causes it to forget the capitalize command and continue normally. Perhaps you can find a similar work-around for gboard.

  • @duanjeffrey As @johnswift37 pointed out (thanks for sharing your workaround!), this issue is known to us. I’m hopeful that you’ll be able to find a similar workaround that works with Gboard.

Thanks for taking the time to report this!

The same issue with SimpleNote and Gboard on iOS.

Tested about 6 other keyboard apps with simplenote: alle the same issue.

And tested every keyboard app with another note app; no issue at all.

It’s really rather annoying no have every word staring with a capital letter.

So… no matter what of who is causing this, it only occurs with simplenote.

That’s a pity, because I really like simplenote.

    Please… fix this.

Thank you for letting us know how this is impacting you @basbuiseu

I hope the work around in this thread helps you so things aren’t as annoying:

In Gboard, if I turn off the “auto-capitalization” feature, it stops this from happening. However, I’d prefer if this were fixed without having to change my Gboard settings.
