Export Notes older than 5 years
-
Hi!
I’ve been an avid Simplenote user for 15 years. When I export notes from the web interface, the Zip archive seems to go back 5 years only. Is there any way to export all my notes?

Hi. I just checked my last Export, and it includes notes (.txt files) from Nov. 2016, when I first used Simplenote. So a 5-year cutoff is not an inherent feature. Are you sure those older notes are still present on the server?
Could it be a size problem? My Export (.zip) is 3.3 MB.

Most notes are very small, total ZIP size (packed) is just 584kb. I analyzed the source/notes.json and found that there are some notes which were created more than 5 years ago, but all of these were modified within the last 5 years. So I’m pretty confident the ZIP file only includes notes modified within the last 5 years.

Interesting. The dates I see on the txt files are the last update dates (using FE File Explorer Pro on iPadOS). Presumably, they are the dates the files were last pushed to the server. And some of those notes were definitely not updated since November 2016.
Have you identified any notes on the server (web app) or on your device (Simplenote app) that are not in the Exported file?

I’ve just tested this as well and the export file that I generated included my earliest notes, which are from 2010.
As @johnswift37 mentioned, have you double checked the web app to see if you can identif any notes there that weren’t present in the export?

Thanks for looking into this. I just exported again now and it seems like this time all the data is there. Something was definitely broken earlier today though, both the notes.json and also the txt files were missing, I still have the archive here in front of me.

I’m glad to hear the export is working for you now! If you run into any issues like this again in the future, please let us know!
