Crashing notes
-
I have at least two notes that crash the program every time I try to open them.
The chat assistant told me to clear the cache, but there wasn’t a cache file to clear at the specified location. I use the latest version 2.18 on macOS Ventura. On the iOS version the same notes open just fine.
-
Hello! That sounds frustrating!
Would you mind trying to copy the content of the notes and paste into new notes? Then delete the problematic entries on iOS? Let us know if that helps resolve the crash you are experiencing on Mac.
-
I used iOS to open the problematic note. I pasted the contents into a new note and deleted the old note. The new note crashes Simplenote on macOS.

Yep, I definitely have notes that have the ability to crash Simplenote every time they are opened. Wonder what kind of magic words I used to write them… Maybe it has something to do with quotation marks or the inch symbol? I must say I’m a bit surprised a text file can do this.
-
Hi @tatusiltanen, did you see any other special characters on the note apart from the quotation mark or the inch symbol? You can try checking the notes on the web app at https://app.simplenote.com on your Mac if it’s easier for you.

Okay, I found something. One of the crashing notes includes a string of text. If I copy and paste this text to a new note, the new note will also crash. The text in question is:
” ccc “”
-
There’s another text that crashes Simplenote, but for some reason I’m not able to paste it here. The text is a string of three minus signs. More accurately, it is this one: U+002D : HYPHEN-MINUS {hyphen, dash; minus sign}

I managed to edit a crashing note using the web app. Now this note has been moved to the top of the list and is loaded automatically every time I run the app, so the app crashes every time on startup.
-
@tatusiltanen So far, I’ve been unable to replicate the crashes on my test device. Are you initially composing the text on a different app/program and then pasting it to Simplenote? If so, which app are you using?
-
I also can crash the app by pasting in certain text. In my case I have narrowed it down to a fraction that the app wants to substitute with a single character. For example if I paste ‘1/8’ (without the ‘) it crashes the app. However if I paste the character ⅛ it does not. It seems the auto substitution combined with the paste function is what does it.

Hi @edlaufer. This is a bit different from the original topic in this thread.
First, could you please identify the computer or device you’re using, and whether you’re using the Simplenote app on the device, or the Simplenote web app in a browser. This is important because the different platform implementations of simplenote are actually different.
Second, magic features like the substitution you describe are not typically part of Simplenote; it really is “simple”. If you’re using a screen keyboard, this could be a problem of the keyboard, not the Simplenote app. So it would be important to identify the keyboard app, and maybe to try a different one.
