Being asked to login EVERY TIME I VISIT
-
I think it’s time to say goodbye Simplenote, you were a really cool idea but the issues over the years (Mobile App not syncing – login being cranky sometimes etc.) have worn-me-down
Thanks for your effort but I’m not playing “enter the code” every time I want to update a note
Seriously…
-
Hi. You can use your password instead of the code. In that case, the login may be retained, for a while at least.
-
I just tested this, and it’s true. I logged in to the web app yesterday, at the time of my previous post, and I’m still logged in this morning (same browser).
-
@johnswift37 Thanks for confirming!
@wowventures Please do try the suggestion and let us know if you still have issues with login or anything else. Thank you!

Is there a way we can stay logged in for more than a day or so? A setting or something?
I used to stay logged into simplenote for months at a time. And that’s kind of important for a note-taking tool. You want to be able to jot something down before something interrupts your train of thought.
But now every other time I want to note something down I first have to spend time identifying fire hydrants and motorcycles.I use many websites, but Simplenote makes up at least 90% of the log-in prompts and captchas I encounter. Other websites remember me. Why is it a miracle if Simplenote remembers me for 24 hours? There’s got to be something wrong.

@aplundell We appreciate your feedback.
But now every other time I want to note something down I first have to spend time identifying fire hydrants and motorcycles.
We’re actively improving our login system and experience to make things easier for you. Once we roll out these improvements, you shouldn’t need to log in as frequently as you do now. We appreciate your understanding during this process.

Hi @aplundell. It will help with the captchas if you allow Cross-Site Tracking in your browser. In some browsers (e.g. Firefox), you can turn off “Enhanced Tracking Protection” for the Simplenote site only.
Alternatively, if you use the Simplenote app for your device, you can stay logged in forever.

To ensure the “Remember Me” feature works properly, try clearing all cookies for app.simplenote.com and then sign in again. Additionally, double-check that your browser is set to allow cookies, as @johnswift37 suggested.
Our new email login feature also eliminates the need for reCAPTCHA when signing in. 🎉

Simplenote is an excellent product. Simply perfect for my needs. I have tried google, MS, all had terrible synchronization problems. Not simplenote.
But on the other hand Simplenote’s login system is as terrible as I can imagine. It is so very frustrating to open Simplenote and see that i should make a lot of useless clicks again, again, again. It is simply unusable on my PC. I don’t need 2 factor security. The most perfect solution for me would be a cookie which remembers me like forever. Facebook is an excellent example for this.
I really, really don’t want to search for an alternative and I hope you can fix this somehow soon.
If everything works fine with WP login, then a possibility to link email account with WP account is needed. I have quite a lot of notes and I don’t want to copy them manually from one account to another.
-
Thanks for the suggestions – none of it worked – cleared cookies, tried a different link
I then realised I was wasting time I could be doing something constructive so I’ve deleted my account and moved on…
Simplenote is a note-taking app – not a banking application – no real need for security (if you’re storing secure stuff here – you’re a moron) – not worth fighting against it either

Thanks for the feedback here, folks! We’re still investigating why some sessions might not persist when “remember me” is selected. Browser cookies are handled differently by different browsers and operating systems and many, many browser extensions and privacy settings do interfere with their ability to stick around permanently, which makes it difficult to debug, but it is on our radar as we’re aware it’s not working as it should for everyone.
As for linking with the WPCOM login, @redstar7, if your account email matches your WordPress.com email, your notes will still be there. There will be no need to copy anything manually. But if you don’t wish to change one or the other email address so they match, you could always bulk export all notes and re-import them into a second account.

I have posted about the excessive login issue several times over the years. They don’t seem to care much about user experience.
-
We care but it’s hard to please everyone :)
We’re always trying to strike a balance between keeping everyone’s data secure (whether or not you’re using Simplenote for anything sensitive, it’s our responsibility to do our best to make sure those notes stay private) and keeping the process smooth. Ironically, we added email sign-in to offer an alternative to folks who were finding the recaptchas on the password form to be too annoying and frequent.
For those having a hard time staying logged-in on the web application, you might try one of the downloadable applications for your platform instead, as those should be able to save your session regardless of your web browser settings. These can all be found at the bottom of the homepage at Simplenote.com.
I am still looking into the issue with “forever” cookies not being forever, so if anyone does experiment and find a setting or plugin that seems to be interfering with saving those cookies, please do update this thread!

Yes the captchas were worse. But the problem is still the FREQUENCY. Every other website I use apart from banks, is good for 3-12 months between authorizations. Why is Simplenote resetting every 3-7 days? If that’s not a setting you’re controlling, it must be a bug.

(For others following this thread, @adamadept and I are troubleshooting in a different topic thread, but I’ll report back if we get to the bottom of it. And yes, that would be a bug.)
