Android app closes by itself shortly after launching the app
-
I have used SimpleNote for 10+ years and love it.
Recently shortly after I open the app and select a not to edit the app just closes itself. Starting today as soon as I open the app it closes, I don’t even have time to select a note.
My device and OS are: Moto g power Android 11

Hi, sorry to hear you’re having troubles with the app.
Just to make sure everything has synced properly if you log in at https://app.simplenote.com do all your notes appear there as you’d expect?
Could you try to manually force close the app on your Android device and see if that then resolves the issue. If not, and you do have everything synced and can see it on the web version of Simplenote it may help to uninstall and then reinstall the Android app.
Let me know if that helps.

I’m having the same issue as of yesterday. I uninstalled/reinstalled the app, but it did not help. I noticed right before this started happening that text was auto-generating in a note. I would type a line, pause, and the app would generate the same text hundreds of times.
-
Thanks so much for following up. Is it just this one note that was having the issue did you notice? If so could you try logging into the web app again, copying the content of that note into a new note so you don’t lose it. Then when it is copied try deleting the original note and see if that fixes things.
Let me know.

I’m having the same issue as well. The app closes itself after about 1 second. Opening a note in this interval doesn’t change anything.
My notes in the web interface are not properly synced, if I add anything and logout it isn’t there anymore after I login.
I use the app on android, I have already force closed the app, cleared the cache and reinstalled the app but it doesn’t change anything. This is not nice, I am currently using another app. If the error persists I will simply migrate completely to that app.

Thanks for letting us know. Our Simplenote servers were having some performance issues. These could have lead to the trouble you’ve been seeing. We’ve since corrected the trouble our servers were having. Can you let us know if your app crashes have been resolved @sandbox1521, @ksmith8da49da331 and @jburdman60?
-
On my side the issues are not resolved. Once again I’ve tried clearing the cache and reinstalling to no avail.
Synching in the web-interface works now.
-
@sandbox1521 If you still have the problem, can you let us know the following:
- what devices you use Simplenote on
- their operating systems and versions
- the Simplenote versions on each
Thank you.
-
I won’t list my exact device, the brand is OnePlus. It’s running Android 12.
The Simplenote Version ist the newest available one, Version 2.29

Hi @sandbox1521, thanks for sharing the details. We’ve followed up with you via email to collect more information for investigations. Please respond to the email when you have a chance. Thank you!

I think I figured out the fix. Prior to this issue I also experienced a note auto-generating repeating lines in a note 10000s of times while on mobile. I think this enormous file has been the issue.
The following steps fixed it for me:
1. Make sure the buggy file that had 10000s of auto-generated lines is fully deleted (clear out your trash from a PC).
2. Go on mobile and clear cache and data of Simplenote.
3. Reinstall the app
4. The app should be asking you to login again, if not you need to reclear cache/data.
5. Upon logging back in on mobile it was fixed for me. -
I am having the same issue – when I go to open the app (version 2.29, on Android 13), the app immediately closes itself. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and I have tried clearing the app cache and user data, but have not been able to fix the problem.
In early August I experienced the same problem of auto-generated repeating lines in a note on mobile. I used the browser version of Simplenote on my computer to access and delete that note. The issues with app launch/crash started sometime after that, several weeks ago now.

Hi @thompsjos, sorry to hear that you’re also experiencing this issue.
Can you please try to make a copy of all notes that you’ve created or edited after August 5 and delete the original notes on the web app?
Then, clear the app cache, reinstall the app, and let us know if the app still crashes.
Thanks!
-
Thank you — I followed the steps you suggested, but am still having the same issue.
In the browser, I deleted notes created or edited after August 5 and also removed them from the Trash. Then on my phone I cleared the app’s cache and storage, uninstalled, and reinstalled, but it continues to crash. For some reason it will allow me to create a Note List widget, and if I try to launch from the widget the note actually will appear long enough for me to see it before crashing; launching from the app icon crashes faster.

Hi @thompsjos, sorry to know that the workaround solution didn’t work for you. I’m escalating your case to be looked into by our developers, and we’ll let you know as soon as we have an update for you. In the meantime, you’ll want to access your notes in the web app temporarily.
We appreciate your patience while we look into this.

Hi @thompsjos! Our developers released a fix in the app version 2.30 which will be available to download from Google Play Store within these few days. Can you please keep an eye out for the update and let us know if that resolves the issue? Thanks!

I realize now that this is an older thread but I was reading it not seeing that because it’s the exact issue I’m having in 2025. I updated my Google Pixel 6a to Android 16 and immediately Simple Note stopped working. My widget won’t load anything and the app crashes immediately when I open it. If I delete my data and cache I am prompted in the app to login as usual, but as soon as I’m logged in, the app crashes again.

Exactly the same issue as @stacksbyashley. My phone updated to Android 16 last week and now the app immediately crashes after opening it. Tried clearing the storage & cache. Tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling (it will open to allow login, but then immediately crashes). The PC Windows 11 app and web login all work perfectly.

Hi. Since this appears to be related to Android 16, it might help to create a new thread, including Android 16 in the title.
