All notes missing in app (iPhone)

Issue: I’ve encountered this a couple times recently. I open the app, and all of my notes are missing, it just offers me the option to create my first note. Even after creating a note, that note is missing. My notes are visible when I view them on my desktop browser, this seems unique to the app.
Workaround: Logging out of my account and logging back in seemed to resolve the issue this most recent time.

This has happened several times this week, and has become a real problem. At several points I’ve had an important note I need to reference, and after opening the app I can’t reach it (or any other note) without logging out and back in again. Or I’ll create a note and immediately lose access to it after I close the note, because all of my notes are missing (including the new one). I’ve been using Simplenote for about 15 years, and have come to depend on it pretty heavily. If this isn’t happening to other people, I wonder if it could be related to the number of notes I’ve accumulated over that amount of time?

Hi. Since you can confirm that your notes are safe using the web app, I suggest that you delete the iOS app and reinstall it. Note that you can access the Simplenote web app in a mobile browser; no need to switch to desktop to check your content.
I’ve a couple of questions, though. How much free storage do you have on your iPhone, and how much storage is Simplenote using? The iOS app stores all your content locally, as well as in the cloud. If you have a lot of data, you could be pushing the storage limits.

Thanks for the reply. A couple things:
Free Space on Phone: 20GB
Storage used by Simplenote: about 50mb
iOS Version: 26.1 (although it might have been 26.0 when I last experienced this problem)It hasn’t happened for a few days so I’m not sure if it’s still an issue or not. Just re-installed the app in case that might help.
As an aside – I know the Contact page says it’s no longer in active development. Do we know if anybody associated with the project still checks these forums? Just curious what to expect. Thanks

Edit: After doing some more looking around I can see some Simplenote folks are still responding to things, which is encouraging.

Hmmm. I’m a 9-year veteran of iOS Simplenote, across 3 iPads, and I’ve never experienced this. It is strange that your app has no notes, then all the notes after re-logging in. I wonder if the app is not initializing correctly, or is losing its loaded data, possibly due to a memory shortage. If it happens again, try force-quitting the app, then re-opening it. That should not require a login. I force-quit Simplenote every night; maybe that’s what keeps me running without problems.

Hope you didn’t encounter the missing notes issue anymore. But if you do, it might worth to try what is suggested by @johnswift37 (thank you for the tips, as always!)

I also have this problem. The notes flashed up for a second and then disappeared. I have tried logging out and back in but no luck. I have also tried both app and browser but I can’t get the notes to show up. I have changed my iPhone to iPone 16 pro when the problem started I think.

@staff-fred Thanks for the response! I haven’t encountered it since my last post, so for me at least it seems to be resolved. Also for what it’s worth – when I was having the issue, force-quitting didn’t seem to have any effect.

Are you able to access the Simplenote web app through a different device, computer maybe? If you are able to confirm that your notes are all updated on the server (using the web app), you could try uninstalling the app and reinstalling it.

I have tried this on both a computer and my wife’s phone. No luck I am afraid. Also tried installing app on different phone and logging in but that doesn’t work either. Frustrating because the notes did flash up very briefly on one occasion so they must be still there.

Sorry to hear that, that does sound frustrating. Have you been using simplenote for long? Do you have an especially large number of notes? No idea if that’s actually related (or what to do about it), just curious.
@staff-fred just wanted to check if anything has changed recently on the backend that might account for this?

@robertjlaing. Is there any chance that you’ve recently changed your password for the account? If so, you may need direct assistance from the hosts.
What happens when you login to app.simplenote.com in a browser? Are you able to login? Have you checked the Settings for any strangeness?

I can log in with my email and password. It is possible that I have changed my password but I can still log in. I have used Simplenote for a number of years but I think it unlikely that the number of notes is the problem because I didn’t use it a lot – just for stuff I wanted to keep!
