All my notes deleted

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I have been using the Browser Version of simplenote for some weeks now, and have created several notes. Today, I deleted all cookies from by browser, and I had to login to Simplenote – as the stored password was obviously deleted.

Now, after logging in again, ALL my notes are deleted!!! This is very frustrating, how can this be?? I tells me to “create my first note”!!! Can you please help restoring all my notes?

    Thank you!

Hi. Are you sure you’re using the correct email for the Simplenote account?

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you for your response. Yes, I am sure that I am using the correct email.

I mainly accessed Simplenote on the browser; I downloaded the App on my iPhone as well, but that never syned.

It’s very odd that your notes would vanish. Have you tried “Trash” under the hamburger menu, upper left?

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you. Yes, there is nothing in the trash. All notes are gone – I am warmly invited to create my first note.

You might find this odd – for me it is very extremely frustrating to lose all my meeting notes, infos on deliverables, collaborations, etc., as well as private reminders, lists, etc.

I would be very grateful if somebody from Simplenote would actually take this seriously – and have a look at my case!

    Thank you.

Have you made any recent changes that might affect your access to simperium.com, where the Simplenote databases are stored? Maybe new password, browser change, OS update, ad blocker, firewall? Could you try accessing Simplenote with another device/computer, or on another network?

Thank you. As I said, I deleted all cookies, so I had to re-enter my password, which has been stored before. After that, all my notes were gone.

I tried now also accessing Simplenote via Chrome and Firefox, and through the Safari browser on my phone (which is also another network) – same issue everywhere. No notes. Empty trash.

  • Hi @sublimeraspberry67a897429f,

Based on your description, it’s possible there might be two accounts at play.

You mentioned you downloaded the iPhone app, and it didn’t sync. This could indicate a separate account on the app, possibly created with a different login method.

Simplenote offers login using both email/password and WordPress.com credentials. If you ever used a WordPress.com account to access Simplenote, try logging in with those details on the web app (Chrome, Firefox, etc.).

    Hi,

thank you for your response. While it could be that the login _method_ was a different one (once with email and password, once with (same) email and code sent to email address), I am sure that I used the same email address. I still have the welcome mail in my inbox from the day I created the account. (I do not even have worldpress credentials; Just for this forum I had to ~guest-login.)

The thing is, that as the App never synced, I only used the browser version. All my notes were written and stored/kept there, until the day I dared clearing my cookies. After that I had to re-login and all was gone. My hunch would be that my notes never were properly stored in the first place (hence, they were also not synced with the App). (But of course, during the first weeks, no note was missing, all was there, all looked perfectly fine.)

Is there any way that you can check whether you can get my notes back?!

    Thanks!

What confuses me is that the Simplenote web app accesses the file server directly, and updates it while you edit. There is no “sync” process. So, you created notes and were able to view them later. That means they were safely stored on the server. They would only disappear if you explicitly deleted them, or deleted your account. If you were using a different user name, the hosts may be able to find them for you. Otherwise, very difficult.

    Thank you!

    Safely stored?!

I just tried to logout from my (now empty, except for a test note) Simplenote account. The message I get is that any unsyncronized notes will get deleted when I proceed. This might be what happened: deleting cookies was effectively a logout… no warning seen, of course, because I did not logout

    Does that make sense?

Very frustrating that something like this can happen…

So, your notes were not synced in the browser app, nor in the iPhone app. It sounds as if your devices cannot access the server at simperium.com.

When I create a note in the browser, with the sidebar visible, I briefly see a “busy wheel” next to the note name in the sidebar every time I make a change. That indicates that my changes are being stored on the server. Could you try the same thing, and let us know what you see. I suspect the busy wheel will never stop, indicating that your changes are not being stored. Try turning off your ad blocker or privacy app and see if that helps.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you. This is it… forever turing wheel here… I am afraid that changing ad-blocker settings, etc is not an option for me (and I would not trust Simplenote anymore anyways).

What I would really need is my notes. But I guess that ship has sailed…

    Thanks for trying to help!

Yes. Unfortunately, it sounds like your notes never left the browser cache. Not sure how you would have blocked simperium.com, which is just in the Automattic range, 192.0.64.0..192.0.127.255. Maybe your settings prevent uploading. Sorry situation.

    Dear all,

I would like to come back to this issue – one last time. A couple of days ago, I logged out of my account, that is now empty except for a test-note, with the “busy wheel” spinning constantly. Just now I logged in again, and the test note is still there!!

So, maybe the logging out in spite of the busy wheel spinning was not the issue after all – and there was another reason for all of my notes being deleted? And maybe this means that there is a way I could get them back? Do you see a way?

    Thank you!

Hi. I believe the note is being held in your browser cache, not on the Simplenote server. That was why your old notes seemed to persist for so long. If you login using another browser, or another device, the note will not be there.

Is there anything in your environment or Settings that might prevent uploading to an arbitrary server (simperium.com)? Are you behind some sort of protective firewall, like a school network?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thank you! Ok, makes sense.

Yes, indeed, a strong firewall – I guess a bit more restrictive than in a school network.

I think there should be a clear warning that all notes will be lost if not uploaded to the server. Yes, there is a spinning wheel and I overlooked that, but given the stakes here, a clear message could prevent a lot of losses.

Thanks again for trying to help!

  • Thanks for the feedback, @sublimeraspberry67a897429f

We will look into improving the flow here and make it more clear in a future version.
