A bunch of my notes were deleted and are not in the trash on any device

Wow. Nope, these notes never made it to the Simplenote backend. They were not backed up as a result. The problem is almost certainly in the iOS app. I’m a little in shock.

Just to confirm, you’ve noticed the notes reverting only in the Simplenote iOS app. This happened right away after you opened the note and without making any edits at all, right?

However, you didn’t encounter any problems when accessing or editing your note via the Simplenote Web App at https://app.simplenote.com/, is that correct?

    You also mentioned earlier:

On iOS I use the app version 4.50 on iOS 17.4.1.

If you haven’t yet, could you please update both the Simplenote app to 4.51:

    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/simplenote/id289429962

and your iOS version to the latest 17.5.1?

We’re trying to determine whether the issue is related to the latest versions or not. Please let us know if you continue to see the same problem after the updates.

It appears that these notes were just never synced from iOS to other devices, period. I did not notice because I access different notes on iOS than I do on desktop. I just checked and I was using the latest iOS version (4.51) when this issue occurred again. Over the past few days I have been on steady WiFi or LTE all the time, so it’s surprising that the app never synced.

I’ve lost faith in Simplenote and will not be using it any longer; I cannot risk this issue happening again. I understand this is a free service and that no user of Simplenote deserves anything, but this is pretty disappointing after using it for 15 years. I cannot remember ever having syncing issues in the entirety of that period, so something has clearly changed in the past few months.

  • We totally get your frustration. We know just how vital it is for your notes to sync reliably, especially when you’ve been a loyal user for 15 years.

We’ll note down your detailed reports and ensure our team gets them. They’ll look into the matter, investigate further, and work on identifying and fixing any potential underlying issues. We genuinely value and appreciate your feedback.

Thank you! I’m curious to know whether there is a way to dump the iOS client’s local data so that I can inspect it and maybe recover what I lost. Personally if I were writing this I would not allow the remote server to unilaterally delete any user-entered data permanently.

  • Notes are stored in a database in the app. There isn’t any way to access them on iOS devices.

However, if you have an Android device, the path to the database is:

    data/data/com.automattic.simplenote/simperium-store

You need to have a phone with root access to see it. This isn’t something we can help with though.
