2FA / MFA support
-
With cybersecurity becoming increasingly more important in today’s world I’m absolutely shocked that systems don’t have multi-factor authentication support, especially simplenote.
This should be their #1 developmental priority.
Anyone know if this is in the works? -
Good question! Security is absolutely important in the world these days. We don’t have any immediate plants to release 2FA, but it is something others have requested and is on our list of features that would be nice to have. I’ll add your words here to our team discussion on it.
I would like to note as well that I don’t recommend storing notes that contain information that is sensitive in Simplenote. Your notes are not encrypted at rest due to server side constraints, so think of our app as something with security similar to email. You don’t want to go around emailing out your password, or account recover codes. Don’t store them in Simplenote either.

@staff-mobilefox while I appreciate your recommendation not to store notes containing sensitive information, that alone doesn’t absolve you of the responsibility to secure your users’ accounts as best as possible. Adding 2FA/MFA is painfully simple, especially when you can piggyback on WordPress 2FA, your parent company.
Regarding the comparison to email — every major email provider I’m aware of offers 2FA/MFA out-of-the-box. I think that’s a poor comparison.
No matter how you would classify the sensitivity of my data, I would like to ensure it’s as secure as possible.

Hi there, @monkeysort!
Great points! We will be sure to relay this to our team for consideration.
I am afraid that we cannot give an ETA on when it might be added, but if more users express interest in this feature, it will increase its chances of being implemented.

Bump.
I noticed the app has a request banner now to support simplenote as a sustainer for the low, low price of $19.99/month. I could never pay that much without 2FA/MFA. It’s now 2024, if it’s not on the roadmap now, I’m convinced it never will be. Sad, really.

The irony of being asked for my MFA code to login to this forum in order to ask for MFA for the product… Please implement MFA for Simplenote.

I’d like to vote to add 2fa, I love the app, and would hate for this to be the reason to leave to a competitor. Security is just a big priority to me personally, especially these days. Perhaps this is not the right forum, but I’d also like to vote on encrypting our data as well. Thanks!

happy to pay something towards simple note but without 2FA i will be heading to onenote soon.

@juelz2016 We’ve added your vote to the 2FA feature requests. We appreciate your feedback!

➕1 here as well 🙂🙌
*Are there any plans to update us if there are still plans for the future of this? The last tease was the blog post over a year ago about new features.

Can someone explain to me why 2FA matters for a note taking app/site? What am I missing? Both the never ending captcha and the email verification make using this as a quick save/copy/paste resource a total pain in the a**.
I’ve had the same bank account with the same password now for 20 years or so with no 2FA and haven’t had a single problem. So why would I care about such security for note taking of all things, and why would anyone target such useless accounts for the purposes of extortion/fraud??
Please make it make sense, and please add the ability to turn it off.
Cheers
